i need to get a new Mac b/c my 3 year old iMac cannot handle HD footage. I am ready to spend 1300-1400 maybe more or less depending on what you guys suggest. Would I be better off just getting the $1150 iMac from best buy? I know building a PC you can get something 20x faster and better for 800$, but I want a mac. Can you build a mac like you can a PC?

I want to edit video. I use photoshop, After effects, FCP, dreamweaver and other programs and want it to run as smooth as possible with HD footage. Any suggestions on what to get, where to buy etc...?

Since I edit HD footage (1920x1080 444 Pro Res) just fine on a 2010 Mac Mini, the Imac should be more than capable. Today, I would get a macbook pro just for the thunderbolt port. If you are willing to wait a month or two, Apple should be refreshing the Imac to include thunderbolt, but don't hold me to that. It's just speculation, although it will certainly happen this year.

I just purchased an iMac in December, and went with the 2.8Ghz i5 processor. It's fine now, but I have buyers remorse and WISH I'd paid the extra $200 for the i7. It's going to last longer and would have made things faster. I'm impatient, though.

To my knowledge, no, you cannot build a mac like you can a pc. And if you're wanting something that can be "changed" you have to go with the MacPro, I believe. You can't change the processors in the iMac's.

Buy an imac online at the apple store, and go to the refurbished mac section. I just bought a refurb quad core i7 imac for $1899.
