General shutter speeds?

Shutter speed suggestions?

Hi, I've never had a video camera where I could adjust the Shutter speeds, so to get me started on my new 7D, could I get some approximations of what shutter speed to use for certain situations?

What's are some good video shutter speeds for

1) Daytime - Sunny
2) Daytime - overcast
3) Evening Sunset
4) Nighttime
5) Action sports Video

Thanks for all the help.

Also, I have an Eclair ACL 16mm motion picture camera. The fixed shutter angle is 175 degrees. Is there a way to translate shutter angle into shutter speed?

Thanks in advance

Don't change your shutter speed at all. Leave it on 1/60 unless you have a very good reason for changing it.

As for shutter angle to shutter speed, 175 is close enough to 180 that we can round it off and call it 180; at 180 degrees the shutter speed is half the frame rate, so at 24fps it's 1/48, at 30fps it's 1/60, and at 60fps it's 1/120.

175 degrees? I'm not too well versed with shutter angles, but 180 degree is 1/48, 172.8 degrees is 1/50..not familiar with 175, though

There is no rule of thumb for those situations...they are stylistic choices.

Want smooth motion? Go with 1/50 (1/40 or 1/60 are acceptable, IMO).

Want jittery motion? Start with 1/120 if you want film-feasible motion, or higher if you want that Crank 2 look.

wait...is the 7D capable of 1/48?

No, 1/50. His question was how does angle translate into speed, so I was giving some general numbers based on a 180-degree angle.

Good question... For me shutter speed/angle are really important in creating effects. Anytime I'm doing Rap videos I go with a 200 shutter speed which I feel is very similar to 45 degree shutter angle. If we are talking about beauty shooting I like 50th or 60th just depending on my mood.

Now is there a hard and fast rule for indoor or out door not really. The best thing to do is experiment and find what your into.
