GH5 Game Over, Panasonic

220 megabits is 27.5 megabytes...the data rates are identical to the BMPCC (in HD).

So ProRes' HQ 110 MB/s in UHD is what it is, but CinemaDNG's 4K lossless 270 MB/s is your best option.

128 GB CFAST 2.0 card = 8 minutes of shooting at 270 MB/sec

256 GB CFAST 2.0 card = 16 minutes of shooting at 270 MB/sec

Has it been confirmed that no RAW is possible on the SDXC? (I haven't checked.)

I'm not a long format shooter so it's never a problem, but a familiar hurdle indeed for those who are until those CFast prices drop (or low-cost cards work).

The issue is having SDXC cards that can maintain a sustained write speed fast enough for RAW recording. Even the pricey V90 SDXC cards are only guaranteed for 90 MB/sec sustained write speed.

My guess is that the cheapest route will be USB-C SSD drives, like the one shown in the BM live NAB announcement today.

I was a HUGE GH3 fan, and a GH4 fan. I jumped to Blackmagic cameras before the GH5 camera era...and so glad I did. It's on another level, and this new cinema camera looks like something you should definitely consider judging by the specs (plus you get DaVinci Resolve?!?). I can't turn up on shoots with a stills camera anymore.

I can't turn up on shoots with a stills camera anymore.

Any client you work for will automatically think this new BM camera is a stills camera because of it's form and layout ( and because it also shoots still photos too ), so I don't see this camera being any different than shooting with a mirrorless or DSLR stills camera.

Yes this is a very impressive camera. The value basically matches the GH5S + the Ninja V 5" 1920x1080 display and the Panasonic Audio adapter. Thats a $2,500 + $700 + $400 = $3,600 value for $1,300. Yeah that is a huge value.

With that said the battery life is horrible. BMD has stated sometimes as low as 20 minutes. Likely when using phantom power mics and other tools that push the power. At best the battery life is 60 minutes. Ok for some productions but a lot have already felt the battery life on the GH5 was getting bad.

Panasonic also makes a lot more sense with a 150mbps format vs 800mbps for ProRes HQ. That saves a lot of space. Not only can you use more affordable recording media on the GH5 but editing and archive space is vastly more realistic for long form projects in 4k. The GH5 still makes a lot of sense if you need to shoot a lot of video that maintains very high quality.

Formats also hit a ROI ceiling in terms of quality. If one can't get amazing results out of 12 stop dynamic range 10bit 4:2:2 150mbps then they are doing something wrong. Going to ProRes isn't likely going to make a high quality impact and going raw isn't going to make a huge impact either for 99% of video shooters. Most people don't want to mess around with raw video and just want to shoot to an easy to handle format. ProRes is pretty easy to handle but it is much larger. That larger size isn't also going to make a huge impact on quality so really how much do you really gain over the GH5 or GH5S?

Having raw is exciting but a lot of people need to seriously ask themselves do they really need it? Is it a must have for the work they do or are there others areas of production that could improve what they deliver to clients? I wish BMD would create their own longGOP format. Thats one of the only pieces of the puzzle missing from their cameras. I know we sometimes act like having less compression is the ultimate end goal but sometimes having a 150mbps format that delivers the same visual quality of ProRes is also equally important. A lot of the people I'm talking about are those that don't even want to mess around with V-log and just want a standard realistic looking profile out of the box. They buy the GH5 because they want that looking through a window feeling. Stephen Fleet is a VFX supervisor for a lot of TV show including Marvels Iron Fist and he loves the GH5 for shooting VFX plates. He is likely more critical of compression and color quality out of any of you and yet loves the GH5 even over the GH5S due to the higher resolution sensor and the out of the box quality it delivers for intense VFX work. So the argument that you need raw for VFX is complete BS. Stephen even found the 150mbps on the GH5 to be just as good for effects work as the 400mbps. That isn't to say the Pocket wouldn't;t be impressive as well but that the GH5 is still an amazing choice.

The GH5 and GH5S also have 4x3 sensors and can shoot anamorphic. If anybody is interested in anamorphic Panasonic is still the only way to go. The GH5 is also adopting HVEC and 5k video recording which are pretty neat features.

Don't count the GH5 out just yet. There is more to life than just having a raw camera and sometimes having that level fo quality can be a hinderance to a comfortable workflow. Abysmal battery life, complete lack of auto focus, and very large files and expensive recording media can be a huge show stopper for a lot of people. Then there is the lack of IBIS which people slammed the crap out of the GH5S for to factor in. The Pocket has no form of stabilization at all. The Pocket also doesn't have a flip out screen for vloggers which combined with the lack of auto focus and IBIS will likely make the Pocket dead in the water.

GH5 is a vastly better stills camera to the Pocket. Even the GH5S is a better stills choice even though the sensor is also limited to 4096 wide images. The GH5S has a 4x3 sensor which makes more sense for printed stills than a 16x9 sensor on the Pocket. The Pocket has to crop the width a lot on the stills for standard photo prints. For example a 10x8" print would need to be cropped to 2700x2160 which is much smaller than the GH5S 3450x 2760 10x8" stills. The GH5S already gets criticized for having low resolution stills. The Pocket is kind of sad when it comes to stills although I give them credit for actually supporting stills.

Finally why don't we actually wait and see what it looks like. Specs don't mean squat in this industry and if they did then every camera released the last five years would be amazing. The camera will not be out until September and at that point we need to see how it actually compares to the GH5.

Pocket Camera also crops in to a smaller window for slow motion, which is a pretty aggressive crop when starting at 4/3rds.

I also have immense confidence in the reliability of my GHx cameras.

However, the BMD should bring truly cinematic images and insane data rates and options to the lowest price point ever. I still can't believe what is on the market this year in terms of price. Just wow.

Whatever it is and will become (I'm interested to see), but thread titles like "game over" are ridiculous at best.

Thank the lord. Didn't have the courage to say so myself.

I actually see this as a positive, in that it should prod Panasonic to continue to deliver great gear.

Will probably hurt GH5S sales to some degree, but for me, and I suspect many others, this isn't a replacement for the GH5. But it certainly is a nice featured cinema camera at a ridiculous price point.

It's par for the course of hyperbolic superlatives. When the evening news broadcasts drop the word "massive" and "crisis" into every story they cover, we tend to do the same. I still can't figure out how the word exacerbate managed to replace the word aggravate in news stories. It is misused in every story.

The English language is experiencing a massive crisis that is exacerbated by the media .....

That's a big deal for me; I have an Alexa - however, I'll probably shoot on the GH5 a lot more..
