Game of Thrones

I had to avoid this thread till I watched part 10. Man, it was AWESOME. Now I can't wait to start reading it. One thing someone warned me about the series, the author has no problem killing ANYONE and they were right. I *like* that he wrote this way. It makes for a very powerful story. I was upset as well over the death at the end of 9! And the fact I normally could care less when watching something, impressed the HELL out of me.

I don't know if this reaction is real but it made me laugh--

HA ha ha...that's exactly how I felt right as the show ended. LOL

I must have sat there with my jaw wide open for at least two mintues after it ended. Then afterwards....anger kicked in. How does that happen? Now they got me hooked. After this....it seems ANYONE is fair game.

Yes I agree. I wasn't prepared for that at all. I'm glad I didn't read the book. They managed to stir up more emotion out of me than I can remember.
you mean the father's just using him and so will the whore, right after he'll finally get emotionally attached to her? hmmm.. i think i like it, sir :)
Riggghhhttt!!!

***Spoiler Alert**

To me the father went from one extreme to another (despising the son....only to suddenly give him charge as the King's hand). And then the very last thing he says to the son is...forbidding him to keep company with that prostitute (knowing darn well his son's insatiable appetite for women like that). He obviously is falling for her. She could very well be a trap.

*SPOILER CONTINUE ALERT*

I felt that the father realized two things; first that his dwarf son was actually smarter than he realized, and I think he trusts his judgement more. Second, he realizes that the new king is not very smart in his actions and things are just going to get worse.

I don't think there has EVER been an end to a show where I wanted to keep going SO much more. And I don't feel like it was left in a lame cliffhanger type way, you can genuinely feel that there is A LOT more story to come. A LOT more lives to watch unfold. Even something as simple as the blacksmiths son who you know is actually blood of the last king. Crazy I tell you.

I finally got around to watching the entire series of Game of Thrones. I just got HBO again, and luckily they put all 10 episodes on the On Demand menu, and in HD too (excellent cinematography and production design).

This is the best series I've seen in a long while. It almost reminds me of Dune crossed with Lord of the Rings. Just epic world-building, great characters, witty and appropriate dialogue tinged with labyrinthian levels of intrigue and deception... I love it. Easily the best sci-fi/fantasy genre TV series since Battlestar Galactica.

I am not sure if I want to read the novels, as I started reading A Game of Thrones about a year ago and got sidetracked then never got back into it again. For those who have read the novels, is there a lot of extra details not included in the show that I might want to discover, or does HBO follow the plots pretty faithfully? I suppose I could wait until each season is over and read the corresponding novel. Then again, I've got nearly a year until season 2 (A Clash of Kings), and I don't know if I can wait that long.

It still didn`t made it over the Atlantic, but I got my hands on the US DVDs (do watch it in English anyway, especially this one, since I enjoy the different English dialects).

I watched the whole season in one afternoon/night. Just could not stop.

Woah!

Really pulled some strings. I like it even more than Lord of the Rings.
Less CGI more story IMHO.

I think it´s amazing what HBO is able to accomplish for 50 million bucks.
I mean hours and hours of great story telling and imagery, shot in the same time Jackson makes a 90 minute film for much more money.

Can´t wait for the next season - I´m absolute hooked.

I read the first book in between the first and second episode.... and it just got worse from there. The fifth I forgot it was coming out, don't know how, and ended up reading it all day and night and finishing in a few days... now I'm worried when the next book will come, I just hope he has been working on all of them this whole time and doesn't take as long as he did with the others.

 Have you seen Lord of the Rings?

I'm just glad there are no elves sliding on a shield like Legolas did. :) Hahah. There are parts I love about Bored of the Rings, but all the scenes of horseback over the mountains and through the woods could have really been cut a bit tighter. :)

I love lord of the rings .... the books, the movies... that's a whole other beast, and not nearly as satisfying. Don't get me wrong visually stunning, you just don't mess with Tolkien's words(best selling books next to the bible in the 20th century...I think?) fine cut stuff out, just don't add in new things(badly) because they stick out like a badly grafted on limb, and things in the appendices were put there for a reason.... sorry just very upset about a few missing things... proper ending(burning of the shire... can't remember what the chapter is called) and getting rid of Tom Bombadil was unforgivable... then again I'm a Tolkien nut and I accept my opinions are not that of every one.

We are all entitled to our opinions and mine might not be popular I just think the Game of thrones television show is a far better adaptation of the original material, though the material is by no means anywhere close to Tolkien's in the first place. Just want to reiterate that I enjoyed the movies, well maybe not the last 30 mins of return of the king, and the visuals were more than enough to keep my inner Tolkien geek happy.

rant over sorry!

LOTR is what got me into film. But I haven't seen the films in a year or two, so I really can't compare them with GOT (though, I have seen each LOTR movie probably between 20-30 times, no exaggeration). Having read the books AFTER seeing the movies, the changes didn't bother me so much. And the endless shots of terrain-crossing didn't really bother me either, but I can see why it would bother someone.

I think Game of Thrones is just written in a way that translates better into film. It has less magical elements, less fantasy, so to me, it was most certainly an easier production challenge. I very much enjoyed all the LoTR movies. On additional viewings, I do get tired of the endless travelling, but the bits in between are really good.

If I ever had a chance to talk with Peter Jackson about what they did, my question would have been about the scene on the causeway, where the heros are fighting the Irikai(sp?) There are thousands of Irikai attacking them and physically the scene just doesn't work. The heros would have been crushed trying to fight that HUGE of a number. I think Jackson was trying to stay true to the story as much as possible, but on scenes like this, it was REALLY difficult to pull off. It's why on a serious note, I think Jackson did a really good job. If he changes the scene too much, people would have been upset even more. I think he just tried to find a middle ground. But having never talked to him, how do I know? :)

Good point! Yeah I don't mind changes to allow viewers to better suspend their disbelief, I guess a just didn't agree with some of the writing decisions, seemed to me like more of them trying to put their mark on the project rather than just adapting, but I guess that is up to each writer and their own style of adaptation.

But yeah so for example the elves at helms deep being added in makes no sense to me, they are immortal or close to, why fight in a battle you will surely loose, and in the movie they all died...

And to the point of them fighting massive armies I know it's nuts but I would buy it, these are fabled heroes of legend up against brainless soldiers not a very hard fight... but you do still have a point.

meh I used to be far more upset about all this but now I'm just happy I got to see an oliphant... oh yeah and the Balrog was freaking awesome

And the other big issue is what is important to one person is not to another. I found this with talking to people about Dune. I've seen both film adaptations and read the first book. I have to say, I thought the changes that David Lynch did to the movie were fantastic. I thought the Sci-Fi version, while closer to the book, was VERY boring. The book has such HUGE expanses of just Paul in his head, or, Paul talking with his mother. I actually stopped the Sci-Fi version while watching it, took a nap, then got up and finished it :) There are many people who hate David Lynch's version with passion. But for me, in my studying of the book and what he had to overcome, I love what he did with it. He made it work in a movie. I even think the changes at the end just gave it some more interesting feelings about the whole thing. It's one of my favorite science fiction films. But, if people hate the changes from the perspective of the book, I can't argue with them. It's very different in many ways. I just love the book and Lynch's version for what they are.

I look at LoTR the same way. As you, there are many parts that are just amazingly beautiful. Some epic shots.

Game of Thrones is like a medieval soap opera with a slight sprinkling of fantasy. :) Not that there is anything wrong with that, because it's a VERY addictive storyline. I almost don't want to finish book 5 because I know I'll have to wait for part 6 for probably a long while! :)

loved Dune both the first book (only one I have read so far) and Lynch's version... I really liked it(and my buddy keeps pushing me to watch the scifi stuff), but I did see the movie first so opposite to my LOTR experience. So yes you are right, it's up to the person and how they got introduced to the material.

You hit the nail on the head with GOT, it's one soap I'm willing to get hooked on (he had me at direwolf), and I wish I had not finished book five, but I have found the video game Skyrim is working as a nice stop gap solution for now(I really wish they made GOT and LOTR games using the exact same game engine though it's close enough for now).

P.s. My brother went for years without finishing return of the king (the book) because he just didn't want the journey to end!
