T2i Galaxy Timelapse

Ive seen many videos of people doing a timelapse of out galaxy. How do they do it?
I cant get mine to look so good. Mine just looks like a bunch of starts together, it doesnt look as good as others.

What do they have the cameras set up as? (Shutter, Aperture, ISO, picture style, etc)

I have a Canon T2i + Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 IS

You mean astronomy time lapses?

Well, the trick is, that you need to find a very very very remote location, where you don't have any light pollution!
What you do is, set your camera to a very long shutter speed! 30+ seconds. I don't think that you can shoot with your aperture all the way stepped down, cause its quite dark!
ISO should be at 100, for lowest noise, if you need it, go up to 400 or 600! Picture Style, any is ok i guess!

With 30 seconds / f 5.6, I had to use ISO 800 to see something from the sky. I don't think noise at ISO 800 from properly downsampled stills will be visible in video.

If you want ISO 100, you will need longer shutter speeds (a few minutes). You can use the Bulb Timer from Magic Lantern in this case.

This is not a timelapse, but it was shot in the same way (before implementing bulb timer): http://www.flickr.com/photos/alexdu/5316997484/

i seems to have some problems too. i've tried an astronomy timelapse tonight with this settings :
550d in photo mode, manual, 1080, f4, shutter 30 secs, iso 160, with a 70-200 f4 usm with autofocus off.
silent mode "fullhd", and intervalometer to 5s nowait.

but all my pictures after the 422 conversions are totally black, i can't see nothing...
i have tested a picture test before, not in silent mode, to see if my settings were right, and they were...

do i have to parameter the shutter and the aperture in ml only, or it doesn't make any difference with the originals canon settings?

a little request if it's possible : no one can make some little step tutorials for timelapse with ML silent mode ? perhaps one for daily clouds, one for astronomy and stars, and the others types of timelapse.

i know that i can find some answers over the web by "googleling", but i'm sure lots of people will be graceful to find some dedicated tutorials specifics to ML silent mode.

it's pretty frustrating to see blacks pictures useless, after more than one hour of shooting...
the 6 august here in france it's the night of the shooting stars (étoiles filantes), so it will be nice to not miss this event.

hope someone can help me...thanks!
Olivier

Yep!
Still not sure to understand everything because my bad english but i Will try to follow the steps from the link you provided.

Thanks
Anyway, tutos would be very welcome and helpfull...(it's not a request, but a wish...) ;)

i must be dumb, i failed again tonight (in photo mode)...black pictures!! :(i think i'm totaly confused with this silent picture function.i can't acheive to let the shutter enought open to see something in this f.... dark night.my steps are : in photo mode, put the lens in manual mode, the camera in manual mode f4 and 30 sec for the shutter (just before bulb), then open ML menu, set to 3s, intervalometer to on/nowait, enable the silent picture in single or fullhd (no diff in the final result...it's black...0o), then i close the ML and the pictures starts, but there is not 30" between each pictures, so basicaly this is normal that my render is totaly black. the record between each pictures is really too speed to let enought light coming in.so i think i really need a step by step help to acheive my astronomy timelapse properly.am i alone to be totaly "à l'ouest" !!!??thanks again Olivier

Its not a simple aim at the sky and shootThings to considerLocation- remote no air pollution or clouds. Hike up a mountainTime of shot - no moon is betterand area of sky -Use an app on iphone star walk to check the constellation and positin of the galaxy or youll just be shooting blank or stars. Dont expose too long or youll just see streaks or over exposeCheck your focus

Thanks to tell me what i already know but my problem is not how to make a timelapse, but how to use ml silent picture in a Astronomy timelapse.

I've done a little timelapse at Home near Paris So with some light pollution, and i got a descent result with stars. But i did it without ml silent pic.

Anyway thanks to answer me.

For long exposures you should not use silent picture (you can't get exposures longer than 1/30 seconds with this mode, unless you know how to program the DIGIC).
