Gain Setting

I just recently noticed that my LCD viewfinder is showing -3 Gain but I have my auto gain shut to OFF. Is this setting always on? Does having -3 Gain give better quality than setting it to ZERO. I am a bit confused about the whole gain thing. Thanks.

In addition to the auto gain switch, there is also a three position switch for gain.

As far as -3, the amount of gain (electronic amplification) is somewhat arbitrary from camera to camera as all circuits have power. In theory -3 should be better.

I have my presets at -3, 0 and 9, but that's just my preference. You might like something different.

Are you referring to the above gain settings on an XH-A1 or something else?

The reason I ask is that my A1 only does -3, 0, +3, +6, +12, +18 etc. I would love to be able to get a +9 gain on it since sometimes +6 is a wee bit weak and +12 is kinda much.

So let's see if I am correct on this? If I have my setting set for -3db then I will get the least noise but a slightly darker image? If I make the setting 0-db will that be as low a noise setting? The image will be lighter though? Thanks.

-3db is technically less noisy that 0db, but personally I use 0db a lot since I can't really see the difference and you get a brighter image. Depends on your lighting situation really.

I find that even +3db and +6db are still pretty clean for a lot of situations where the light levels are not optimal.
