GH4 [G7] 4K Shooting G6 replacement

G6 with a 14/42mm lens was $750 on arrival two years ago. G7 is likely to stay there, at about a half of GH4.

Dang.... I was about to pull the trigger on a used Gh4. Now I have to wait to see the price on the G7.... and if they've crippled it like they did on the LX 100.

If the G6 is indeed a mini Gh4 in terms of 4k video.... then I'm in! The seller of the used Gh4 is asking $1600 Canadian.... still too much if you ask me.... had hoped the panasonics would drop their prices like the way Olympus is doing.

I'm almost tempted to pick up an Om em10 for stills because I like the IBis stabilizer.

The G7 looks good... I like the clean cubic design.

Some form of crippling is guaranteed. There wouldn't be a Japanese camera without it. We'll just have to wait a few days more too see what it is.

BTW, sometimes they'll also "upcripple", i.e., require a CF card where SD would suffice just fine, etc.

1600 loonies is U$1331, according to today's exchange rate. It sound a little high for a used GH4. Recently, it was being offered for $1,500 brand new.

Prices of 4K cameras are protected by the Japanese camera cartel anyway (unlike 4 TV's, as an example, where there are dozen of new models, 4K releases are very deliberate and Panasonic, at the moment, has no Japanese competition for 4K ILC under $4,000, which is where JVC LS300 currently stands. The 4K market, however, is largely between the Korean and the Chinese companies, with Sony, Panasonic, Sharp and Toshiba having to fight for the market share along with everyone else)

As a side note, I was looking up some info on Jeffrey Kessler, who's representing Tom Brady in that deflated ball debacle. Kessler, in the past, represented the Japanese TV manufacturers in the anti-trust suit brought up against them by Zenith (then a US based TV manufacturer) in the mid-70's. The charge had to do with price dumping, i.e., JVC/Sony/Mitsubishi were accused of fixing the TV prices at too low a level in order to drive their US competition out of business. Kessler won the case ... and, in the era following that proceeding , the US TV manufacturers indeed closed up their shops. The old days of GE, RCA, Sylvania, Zenith, Curtis Mathis, Magnavox are long gone. At best, brand names have been sold to the Asian conglomerates. At worst, they've become a forgotten part of history.

Pretty sure it'll lack a lot of things in the firmware, like timecode support and shutter speed by shutter angle settings. Good chance there's only mic-in and no headphone out, like the G6.

It's official:

Trying to figure out if it crops at all during 4K or HD shooting and what the bitrate is for 4K (or should I say UHD).

Sadly no headphone jack, but I guess that is to be expected since this isn't a GH4. Even though it should be standard on any camera that records audio.

Also, it seems to limit the video recording to 29 minutes and 59 seconds for UHD. Also that limit is in place for HD, but is further limited by the 4GB file size cap which you could reach before 29 minutes and 59 seconds. Weird.

..can you get 50mbit hd from 4k gh4 or g7?

The bitrate is what the camera records at. A higher bitrate can mean more detail recorded (or at least less compressed). But the efficiency of the encoder also has to be taken into consideration, because not all 50Mbps recordings are the same. So it's a bit subjective. I would say that the only way you're going to truly get 50Mbps is if the camera records over 50Mbps in 4K mode, which it should.

You can get 4:4:4 color HD from a 4K 4:2:0 recording.

The same 100 Mbps recording bit rate as on GH4. HDMI Type D Micro connection. Only UHD (no DCI). $797 with 14-42mm F3.5-5.6, $1295 with 14-140mm F3.5-5.6 and 25mm F2.5. 4:3 recording for anamorphic. 1/8" microphone jack, WiFi.

Sounds like Panasonic has a winner here. I'd like to see some footage though. Unless it's exactly the same as the GH4.

If you are right about the 4:3 anamorphic 4k then consider me sold on the G7! I had been watching Craigslist for a decently priced used Gh4.... but now there's a reasonably priced alternative for 4k.

Meanwhile, I'll return the Olympus Em10 I bought a couple of days ago (the salesman told me to take it out for a spin... it was a demo model). While I loved the stills quality and especially the IBIS, the video kinda sucked eggs.

G7 here I come!

I hope that Panasonic will make a FW fix for 14-140 II OIS when they are selling G7 kits with that lens. More people will be familiar with jittering 4k videos.

Just want to verify something; the G7 can't do 10bit uncompressed via HDMI to something like a Shogun, correct?
If it's not mentioned anywhere so far, chances are it does not exist.

Is Panasonic protecting GH4 with this? Uh ...

No ****. :P The Japanese camera companies by now have mastered the art of product segmentation.

I think GH4 owners may not be happy if the cheaper model has all the same "professional" features even if Panasonic could easily add them to G7.
