GH3 G6 vs. GH3

Maybe this should have gone in the stills/motion gallery, not sure.. But here's an excellent video shot with a preproduction G6. I'm leaning toward this camera over the GH3 for the feature set, including focus peaking.

Footage looks horrible, codec looks beyond weak.....

No way in the world this compared to 50mbps of the GH3 and not even close to Black magic and 5d Raw which is honestly my next step. I think G6 footage looks too much like video and macro blocks everywhere couple with lackluster dynamic range.

I agree. That does not look good to me at all. Looks like the picture crumbled due to heavy compression or grading or something.

I watched this on my iPod. It's only when I watched it on a PC that I realized the image itself is nothing to write home about. But I like the clip and the audio nonetheless.

Couple of odd things in this thread...you can't put a speed-booster on a 12-35. Also the Magic Latern hack is spanning but the 256gb/hour estimate is very low, my understanding is double that as a 128gb card is getting under 15 minutes of raw recording.

I'm looking forward to getting a GH3 before my GH2 is finally consumed by the jungle.

.....you can't make any judgement about this camera using this footage. It's been heavily graded and who knows how it's been compressed . And to compare it to cameras in a completely different ballpark is irrational. You want to compare it to the 5dmklll, BMCC, and the gh3 , all costing multiples of it's price ? Let's be patient and wait for some downloadable footage straight from a camera ! And concerning DR ....it looks better than the gh2 imho.

The BMPCC is about the same cost, and its image is similar to the BMCC, so yes it is valid.

If it matters, the person who shot this video said he used the mp4 codec. So this video is not an indication of AVCHD, which I would guess is what most users would choose.
The footage looks fine in terms of composition and cool locations. But it does look mushy and also over-sharp and video-ish in parts. The dynamic range looks poor, but that could be due to slight overexposure on the shooter's part. It didn't impress me, in any case.

* scratches head

Your post makes no sense. This thread title CLEARLY says G6 vs GH3. Stop trying to believe something that does not exist. The codec of this camera cannot compare to the higher quality of the GH3, period. Just like the GH3 cannot compare to the Pro Res Hq and Cinema DNG of the BMCC. These cameras are good for what they are, but facts are facts.......

Case Closed/

"scratches head".... should be followed by .....duh.

My posts makes absolute sense. And I've never, even if you read the first page of this thread, attempted to compare the g6 with the gh3, except to say it has features, esp peaking that gh3 owners are not too happy about.

...there were alot of those types of comments about the gh1 and gh2 as well. And now that the 5dmklll has raw, we see it finally has the resolution of the gh2 ...wow !

My take on the g6 has always been factored with the hope it'll be hacked and give us another gh2 upgrade. I believe I even started a thread in the news section titled something to the same effect.

....to say the case is closed when the camera hasn't even been released, much less hacked, and you're basing your judgement on a preproduction camera shooting a highly compressed mp4 file is hilarious ! And even if it's hacked I wouldn't compare it to the gh3. The real comparison is to the gh2, regardless of the title of this thread, and your interpretation of it's subject matter.

case definitely not closed....until real reviewers have production cameras in hand !

Also the Magic Lantern hack is spanning but the 256gb/hour estimate is very low, my understanding is double that as a 128gb card is getting under 15 minutes of raw recording.

Magic Lantern 5D Mk3 RAW Memory Requirements

4 GB = 55 seconds
64 GB = 14.7 minutes
128 GB = 29.4 minutes
256 GB = 58.8 minutes

GH2 hack cannot compare to GH3........

I own two of them and currently use one as a B camera so I am very much aware....... I work and shoot constantly, this is no myth. GH2 hack falls apart when grading compared to GH3. GH3 falls apart when grading compared to RED.

Now obviously I cannot afford an Epic at the moment, but I will be purchasing a BMCC real soon. DSLR's while great are simply not on the same level as higher cameras, period. I love my GH3 as it was a big improvement over my GH2 Hack cameras, but I still need to make a bigger step.

Even the G6 with a hack is not going to improve dynamic range which falls very short when compared to Black Magic Design pocket camera.

You can pay $600 or whatever the G6 cost or pay more and have a professional quality camera. If you make a living from this or plan on too, the price difference is nothing compared to the quality you are getting. No matter what you or me says, no one in going to take a G6 as a professional camera......

...he's not comparing it to the bmpcc...he's comparing it to the $3000 bmcc. And also the bmpcc cost almost 50% more than the g6 ...body to body. And yes I know...everyone will buy it ...when it's finally released....and then when you can actually go b&h and put it into a cart ! But I always get lightheaded when people start comparing 2 cameras, both unreleased !

I think patience is a more logical position.

My final post in this thread, you just don't get it.........

In a world of imagery where many people make a living and feed their families , cameras continued to grow , get cheaper and provide better quality. No doubt in my mind G6 is a good camera and a hack can make it better. What I am ultimately saying is, there are far better cameras that do not cost much more. A GH3 can be had for $1200, a BMCC for $3k.

Now yes that is double or more the cost, but still very inexpensive for what you are receiving. Only 5 years ago this was a dream and I come from that world......

Lets just say you market yourself to do a job and you show up on set with a G6. Sure you can get the job done and ultimately your skill is what's going to make the content good or bad, but your clients will pay you a certain amount. Step on the same set with a BMCC and that camera that only cost $2k more can allow you to charge much much more money.

So take this in and out it in perspective. I work with many artist doing Music Videos. No matter what I think or say they will only pay me so much using a GH3 camera. My friend who has a Red Epic and a C300 couple with a 3 ton grip truck gets paid 3-4x as much as I do.......

With a BMCC I am able to market myself to larger clients, at the end of the day that is all I'm saying. Heck we shot a 20k video with a GH2 and it looked amazing, but we had 2k tungsten lights, led lights, him and so much other ish that it really compensated for the weak dynamic range of the camera. In lighting alone was in the thousands of dollars in rentals.....

I'm done here
peace

I don't disagree an iota with that statement. The only problem I have is comparing two completely different animals. The gh1, gh1, gh3 and hopefully the g6 are hybrids able to shoot photos as well as video. Since I do both, that's why I'm particularly interested in hybrids. I'll also, as I've said, be interested in the gh3 when it's price levels out to around a grand. A grand is pretty well my self-established limit these days of everchanging technologies. The bmcc doesn't shoot photos and I'm not interested in narrative workflows. In fact, I personally feel narrative filmmaking is in it's death throes( I see about one good film a year), but the bmpcc however , because of it's (hopefully) great IQ and m43 mount has perked my interest...along with a million other humanbeings. But , it'll be at least a year before it's debugged and you can walk into a store and buy it...imho.

So...I'll be patient and see what shakes out. But at some point, you either accept it...or you are forever on that digital wishlist road. In a year , 4k will be coming to consumer cameras.

My final post in this thread, you just don't get it.........

....oh, I get it...

Looking at your profile...it says student. I've been shooting photography, s8 and 16mm film since the early 70's, when I was a student, and was a original dvcam and fcp 1 owner in '98, and la-te-da. And I've been supporting myself as an artist free of clients dictates since 1985. I don't have to impress anyone with a camera . I only sell a finished product. People can buy it...or not. Luckily I don't have anyone I have to please with preconceived notions of their imperfections. Sorry you're in that position of marketing yourself and think the camera you bring will somehow substitute for creativity ! You best be saving up for that Red in that case.

adios

...But you would need most of this lighting no matter what camera you are shooting with. A larger dynamic range or better low light performance does NOT mean you get to use less lighting ( or no lighting ) to achieve an equivalent shot.

This would be true if proper exposure was the only issue that mattered, but lighting sets the mood/look of your image and often can't be achieved any other way.

Live events are different because most of the time you have to work with the lighting that is already established, so low light performance and a better dynamic range are a huge help in getting a good shot.

*Need to clear this up and final words

Since when does a student make me more or less talented than someone.... I can assure you there are very young talented minds creating things many people would have never imagined. Many people such as yourself fear change, cannot embrace technology and is the sole reason you will be the death of your own self. There's a reason cameras with higher resolution and dynamic range exists, if you think you can create the same shot with your old dvcam go right ahead.

Some old dogs can no longer be trained, luckily I still have an open mind and embrace technology. Before you think you might be smarter or can create something better than student or someone younger than you than you've already lost.......

peace
