GH3 G6 vs. GH3

I feel bad about ever posting that video now. The forum shouldn't be about attacking people. I merely thought the G6 might be a good working camera for my needs, but I wouldn't ever say it was better than the Gh3. I don't make money with my video, it's just a hobby. Black Magic makes some great cameras too, but with storage, lenses, etc. I think very costly on my limited budget, and I know nothing about working with RAW, color grading and all that. Maybe I should forget all about even getting a new camera and focus on learning more about editing instead. Because if I had the ability to make a video half as good as the one I posted, with macroblocking, burned-out highlights, limited DR and all, I would be very proud of myself.

Don't feel bad. You cannot control people and it seems some of them can't even control themselves.

Go with your heart and if the G6 looks good to you (and I think it definitely will be) then go for it, forget the negativity and enjoy developing your craft. It's a wonderful journey and we should all be grateful for the riches that now surround us.

Your instincts concerning the Blackmagic Pocket camera are spot on. Great idea, excellent image for certain things, but the additional costs and finicky workarounds will frustrate people when reality hits.

And please keep participating in the forum. It's like life in general, there's always at least one p**** that spoils the fun.....

thank you for your reply stoneinapond.

I agree with the previous poster that if you're getting gigs because of your new wizbang gear, you're setting yourself up for disappointment. In the past, most DPs didn't own cameras! They owned diffusion glass, gels, poss some lights, and very possibly great sticks. But the camera was the choice of the production. You want to be getting the gig because of WHAT YOU CAN DO not what you're doing it on. All of these cameras can make art and tell a story. Upstream Color is a real, successful film despite being shot on a sub $1000 camera.

*Need to clear this up and final words

Since when does a student make me more or less talented than someone.... I can assure you there are very young talented minds creating things many people would have never imagined. Many people such as yourself fear change, cannot embrace technology and is the sole reason you will be the death of your own self. There's a reason cameras with higher resolution and dynamic range exists, if you think you can create the same shot with your old dvcam go right ahead.

Some old dogs can no longer be trained, luckily I still have an open mind and embrace technology. Before you think you might be smarter or can create something better than student or someone younger than you than you've already lost.......

peace

...just how many final posts are you going to make ?

Did you come across this guy in school ?..... Jean Cocteau

Film will only become an art when its materials are as inexpensive as pencil and paper.

Now luckily you've given me a nice little forum for saying something about new media , sadly seldom said, usually produced by neophytes for a culture lost in it's own whirlpool of crap. . New media sucks. 95% of new music sucks. 95% of new films suck. And 95% of new art sucks. Thank god for that 5% !

...if you're claiming responsibility....

....and where did you see I fear change ? That's a pretty big leap from comparing the g6 to the gh2 or 3....or not wanting to jump on every new camera bandwagon that comes along ! You see , Cocteau knew something most iphone generation people will never understand....because they are too busy "upgrading" ! Technology only gets in the way of true creativity.

And another pet peeve. Us ole dogs are smarter. But that's something you can only learn by doing it !

And my final peeve is ....because the new generation is growing up with earbuds and cellphones....soon to be google glasses attached to their sensory nodes ...the world is becoming a dangerous place. But they don't even see it because they're too busy "upgrading...uptexting....uploading ....upfacebooking....upliving . The scary part is....that's part of the plan !

Hey...did you jump on that 3d bandwagon as well ?

Someone would have to shoot me to make me watch one more Grammy Awards . It's just painful.

That would make two dead bodies.....

Where has people's honest critical faculty gone?

To go back to an earlier point. The G6 video posted isn't terrible. It's nowhere near my idea of grading, etc., but there is some merit in the content. Current TV programming and many big feature films have just gone off the cliff.

So I'll just keep making my own with the tools at hand. And if anyone doesn't like it....tough.

Dingo....It's my belief that there are periods of renaissance creativity. Look at music from the 60's and 70's ...and look at the music from today.

Whose to blame ? ....MTV !!!...and crappy music videos !

Someone would have to shoot me to make me watch one more Grammy Awards . It's just painful.

yeah, classic rock from the 70's, for example, had a lot of artistry with creativity and extended-play songs.

The pace of that time was slower and attention spans longer. There's no reason why young bands today couldn't create epic masterpieces like Stairway To Heaven, Freebird, etc...humans haven't devolved that quickly.

But no one has the attention span to listen to them, anyway (talking about mass audiences). Soon as there would be a long guitar intro, most people would get impatient and click away. People want things now.

To be fair, there is actually new music out there which is the equivalent of 70's classic rock with most of it incorporating heavy metal in some way; with various sub-genres such as progressive metal that permit more artistic freedom and longer songs...but that is not going to take over the mass appeal like the 70's for reasons mentioned.

You guys should shoot a reality based sitcom called, Grumpy Old Neighbors.
Or time travel back to the 60's and 70's and listen to what grumpy old neighbors back then have to say about the now "classic" music from that time...
As for the G6, I might just get it for the 60p. The price/performance ratio will be hard to beat.

Narrative film died for me the moment I first watched Bill Viola's "The Passing". Like I said...I see about one good narrative film a year....and none of them have cgi ! And thank god at the very least....for that one ! Otherwise, it's docs from the 60's ....Pennebaker , Leacock ...the Maysles are gods ....and thankfully , good docs are still being made . Leacock's last film was made with a Hi-8 and the Maysles used pd150's...to disparage dvcam !

And in my "ole fogey " philosophical pov ....which I prefer to call "wisdom" ....the destroyer of our creativity is it's hip-hopification. It's the falseflag of culture, dumbing down teenagers before they can even learn to think for themselves.

...yo bro ! cheers

ps...oh yea..the g6 ! Let's wait for the camera to be released before we completely destroy anyones desire to actually use it ! All I know so far is that the feature set , minus not having 720/120p, is what I've been waiting for . Let's wait to hear from some competent early adopters who actually have a production camera to test. Hopefully it'll be another step closer to Cocteau's dream .

Thanks for the laugh, that was good......

No doubt the 70s and movies from the past were great and maybe today cannot match the mind of a great Alfred Hitchcock or Scorsese, but I will tell you there are many youth studying and learning and making technology better and creating things that were no longer possible. As an older and wiser gentleman I have an idea.

Someone from an older generation mixed with today and we go back and forth giving ideas on how things can be better. No one can deny the beauty of the BMCC at the price, that level of quality is closer to film than dslr technology and is the main reason we want future to advance.

Take it easy pops, we can learn from one another.

Take it easy pops, we can learn from one another.

...I seriously doubt that we'll have that glorious opportunity ...much to my dismay, certainly !

...creating things that were no longer possible. As an older and wiser gentleman I have an idea.

...and just how do you create things that were no longer possible ? And you mean...."as an older wiser gentleman you WILL HAVE an idea ?

I certainly hope the best for you...cheers
