G5 - SATA vs. Firewire - VIDEO

That video is half true because he is talking about Firewire400, Firewire800 transfers up to 100mb/s or so if im not mistaking. So Firewire 400 vs. SATA should be his argument, not Firewire altogether.

G-Raids are the way to go, without a doubt. Especially the bus powered ones for you HVX and Mac Laptop or PC Laptop users on the go.

I dont understand the question? I dont have to watch a video to know that SATA is faster / better. There is no contest. I use it on my G5 and on my MacBook Pro. Frewire will work of course ,and of firewire the 800 variety is well - faster than the 400.

What the theoretical transfer rates of FW are is one thing.

What actual rates are is quite different.

That depends on how FW is implemented with what controller, chipset, enclosure and on what platform

That isn't true of SATA. In addition, FW is atleast on a Mac limited to a single bus.

That's ain't good.

If you are already using SATA and a raid array then yes this video may be stating the obvious.

BUT if you haven't researched the topic, this does a good job of explaining the technologies. Also there are other drives besides the G-Tech that are better/cheaper if you are so inclined to build a custom rack.

Also some people may not understand the difference between a FW-RAID and an SATA-RAID. Studio Daily produced this video because there is obviously a need for this information.

Cheers,

Matt
