G-drive mini

Does anyone know if the USB port from the HPX300 delivers enough voltage to power a "G-drive mini" (320 GB/7200 rpm) from G-technology? Anyone tried it ???

Any similar products available which can do the job ?

I got a 250GB Seagate FreeAgent Go for about $60 on sale - works perfectly with the 300, has its own protective case and is nice and small.

I think the most small HDDs works with the 300, but they runs at 5400 rpm. The point in Cees question is, if the 300 can deliever enough power to use a HDD with 7200rpm.... Am i right?
I also use small HDDs from diffrent manufacturers and all works fine but only at 5400rpm.

Yes Emmet you are right that was my question. By the way is a 5400 rpm not to slow to transfer the footage from the HDD to FCP ?

Oh OK, I missed the point, sorry. As for 5400 - it's plenty fast enough to transfer footage from the HDD to FCP. Editing is a different story. While 5400RPM might work, 7200 is definitely the safer bet for editing in FCP.

Back to the original question - if the drive comes with a power supply, I would bet it will NOT work. I have an OWC On-the-Go 7200RPM drive with both USB 2 and Firewire 400 & 800 interfaces. It works just fine without a power supply using Firewire. With USB 2, no dice - I had to use an external AC adapter (included with the drive). So - without knowing specifically whether the G-drive mini will work, my bet would be - if it has a power supply connector on the back, the answer is "no."

The e-mail support addresses for G-Technology is: support@g-technology.com -or- eusupport@g-technology.com (for Europe). Good luck! :)

i use LaCie 301310 200GB Rugged Portable Hard Disk Drives with USB and Firewire 400/800. 7200 rpm and the 300 drives it just fine.

5400 isn't too slow for a transfer, but it can be problematic if you want to edit directly off of the drive. (dropped frames, etc.) 7200 seems to take care of that issue - for me, at least.

I use a G-Drive mini 200GB/7200RPM (USB2/FireWire only, not the current triple interface model) with no issues on the 300, works great.

That sounds good so there is no reason why the Gen4 G-drive mini would not work, right? I don't want to use it for editing just for emptying the P2 card via the USB of the HPX300.

Is it possible to copy only a single clip from the P2 card (using the HPX300) to the hdd which is connected to the USB port or is it only possible to download the complete content of a P2 card????

I believe you have to copy the entire card. It just makes an exact copy of the P2 card and saves it as a new partition on the hard drive.

Also, you can't delete individual shots or cards from the HDD once you transfer it, your only option is to erase the entire drive.

But you can copy more cards to a HDD untill it is full. So 5 64 GB cards onto a 320 GB HDD?

Is the following "workflow" possible :

1. The HPX300 formats the HDD (on the go type)
2. I shoot a 64 GB P2 card full
3. Copy the content to the HDD
4. Transfer the content to FCP and do the editing.
5. Copy the resulting project back to the HDD where the origanal raw footage from the P2 card is still present.

question : is the HPX300 able to transfer the content of a next full P2 card to the same HDD when stil the first content of the P2 card and the edited project is present ????

Not quite, once you format the drive in the camera, only the camera can write to it. When you mount the drive on your FCP station, you only have access to the P2 partitions created by the camera; there's no free space partition. So, while you can go back at any time and add another P2 card through the camera, the drive essentially becomes read-only to the computer.

Once you formatted the HHD using the HPX is it possible to transfer P2 cards with different sizes (e.g. a 32 Gb and 64 Gb card) to the same HDD?

I only have 32GB cards, but I can't imagine that will be a problem. If you transfer a partially full card, it only uses as much space as you've used on the card, so that should scale to different card sizes as well.

Once the HDD is formatted by the camera, you can offload any size P2 card to it. I have a drive with 8's, 16's and 32's on it. I did have a slight problem when I filled up a 500 gig HDD full with P2 media, AVID didn't like that much info in one bin. Easily fixed by moving the media to another drive. BTW, using shotput pro to backup P2 media onto other drives, easier than the panny software. $80 for the software
