http://smallhd.com/store/dp1xbundle.php

PS - I don't work for them, just spreading the word 'cos its a great monitor

$1000?

No monitor that small should cost that much, I don't care what kind of colors that display has.

Just to entertain this topic though, what is so special about this monitor that makes it cost so much? What advantage does this smallHD have over the cheaper $180-$200 screens?

FInally if I have a t2i which outputs a crop image anyways how would this help? I understand a 7d could make full use of the screen, but a 5d and t2i are basically cropped images while outputting?

Even if I had the money I just can't justify that price tag.

think ahead, cameras change fast

Yes, but cameras do not disappear. Meaning you have people still using a 5 year old Dvx for their pro projects, so you mean to tell me the current line of dslrs that have been out for a lot less will magically vanish in a couple of years?

IMO I do not understand how or why that small monitor cost that much, if someone can show me why it is worth it to make me understand than my views can change.

it's high-def. Genuinely. I'm pretty sure it's the only monitor that size with an actual resolution of 1280x768. Most are only 800x480. Yes, even $1600 Marshalls.

If yhou have a 7d which outputs the res this is the ONLY monitor in town sub $2k

you can almost see what you are recording (unlike Zfinder or 480p monitors)

IM not a fan of the batteries - went Vlock - but it need regulated 12v - so a specialist breakout box was required

The DP1 got compared to the Marshall V-LCD70XP-HDMI (800x480) screen a lot and people generally recommended the Marshall. The jist is that the extra resolution of the DP1 is great but the color banding in low light and the lack of color accuracy made it lose out to the lower resolution but better color 70XP.

I spoke with SmallHD (great people) and was told that the updated DP1X "It's definitely a lot better, but it's not completely free of banding."

So what do people think now? Rather have the new DP1x with true HD resolution and decent color or the LCD70XP? The brightness etc. are pretty similar, it's the color accuracy that is lacking on the DP1x side.

I don't care about Peaking (because it's too aggressive/not accurate and isn't needed for a HMC150/HPX170 which have focus assist) and the False color (because I can just use a waveform monitor for that.)

So DP1X users, is it good or still problems??

Mine's fine but I never owned the dp1, only the dp1x.
Right now it's main purpose is for focus with dslr's and 720p will become
useful when I switch to scarlet or AF 100 later. Maybe as client monitor.

Banding Issue?

Banding Issue?

Do you see banding? What are the biggest cons for the monitor?

Halfway down this review he shows a photo he took of the DP1 displaying a low-light image with lots of banding in it, and decided against it for that reason.

There's also this review mentioning banding, but both are original DP1's. I can't find a review of the revised DP1x.

Do you see banding in low light and how much does it affect you?
What about color accuracy issues?

Would really appreciate your input, I'm thinking of buying one today:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)!

I'm at work so not near my gear.

Biggest cons? The sunhood was really tight to put on and had a tear in it but smallhd are swapping it out for me and covering shipping on the return.

Biggest advantage - buttons are all on the back and have different shapes to them as they are designed to be operated by touch while a four sided sun hood is in place. Very useful.

Banding and color? I am not the best to comment on that as I am very picky about both and therefore the only thing I trust is what I see in post on a calibrated monitor.

I like the larger size and I wanted 720p especially as I will not be on canon DSLR's any longer than I have to

Just wanted to post back in this thread as someone had asked me whether I was satisfied with color
and the answer is yes. However it is important to go into the menus and customize the settings.

At the moment I am shooting with canon dslrs in neutral picture style 0, -4, -4, -1
I took a high contrast detailed portrait at 1080p to my mac in prores 4444 and viewed it with a
color calibrated monitor.

Then I matched the dp1x by playing with the custom settings. Be sure to pull the dp1x sharpness all the way down to 4 or below (0-100 scale)
My other dp1x settings ended up being nudged down the scale for brightness, contrast
hue and saturation in varying amounts, then saved it under custom 1
You can read about all of this in the manual which is downloadable from their website

Of note:
1:1 pixel mode on the dp1x is pretty useful especially when combined with the focus assist on the camera

Thanks!
I ordered one yesterday, should have it by tuesday. Pretty excited. As far as calibration goes, is each monitor very different?

If I used your settings on my monitor do you think it would be correct?

Also, after calibrating it how close was it to the professional editing monitor?

I'm not sure if each monitor is different. My dp1x settings for now are
contrast - 47
brightness - 42
hue - 46
saturation - 38
sharpness - 4 (when in 16:9 mode, 0 when in pixel 2 pixel mode)
backlight - indoor
scale - 16:9

probably will tweak them as I use it more and more

Nice of you to post those settings for the thread, I'll save those as a preset along with whatever calibration preset I come up with following their tutorials, and compare them.

I'll be using mine with a HMC150, and possibly a hacked GH13. Definitely expect it to help with the HMC150.

have they figured out a way to get hdmi out from the gh1?
(sorry I haven't been following the last 2 weeks)

Ha! It's true, 2 weeks on this forum is like 6 months. I've been watching the AF100 wishlist thread practically in real-time.

I don't really know about the GH13 monitoring yet I've got to figure that out.

I think what you are able to do currently is a live component-out feed while you are setting up your shot. Once you hit record even that goes.

That's my understanding, but I'm not sure what the latest is with Tester13.

I'm buying it primarily for my hmc150, which has a 3.5" very low-rez screen.

I'll report back what I figure out next week when the dp1x arrives.
