Other: FX9 4K record HD Stream

Hi all, hope you are well,
Just been briefed on a project and would like some of you pros to weigh in:

Using 7 FX9s to shoot live theater production. Producer wants streaming in HD but would like to keep a (DCI) 4K version of the live cut from switcher for video on demand options in the future.
I’m wondering what a good workflow would be for this. We’ve got our eyes on various switchers that would allow for the 4K feed via sdi but concerned with how to feed one to a recorder and one to the HD stream.

Any suggestions welcome, cheers

Hey pveal,

I stream all the time with my FS7II, FX6, A7SIII and A7RIII. I normally am streaming to HD with a Blackmagic ATEM Mini Pro ISO with my cameras set to 4K. When doing this, I have my cameras recording the 4K files internally while they are simultaneously pumping HD files to the ATEM via HDMI which is then being streamed live. The ATEM Mini Pro ISO is also recording HD copies of each camera to an SSD drive while also recording the stream itself as well as a Resolve project file of the stream in case you wanted to go back and literally edit the stream at a later date. It's a great feature.

Blackmagic has recently announced the ATEM Mini Extreme which allows for up to 8 HDMI inputs which would be perfect for your upcoming project. I highly recommend it alongside an Elgato Streamdeck which is helpful for adding custom buttons to your stream.

I stream a lot like this and am actually streaming a 3 day long event next week in which every day of streaming will be 8-10 hours long and on multiple cameras. This is a super reliable way to achieve what you're upcoming theatre project requires.

Hey! Love that rather slick workflow you've got going there. I was tossing around how you would accomplish something like a 4K/HD stream workflow without too much complexity. You appear to have nailed it with a pretty small efficient and not too expensive setup. Well done sir! Thanks for the heads up.

Thanks Joshua Milligan, agree with cyvideo; that's a slick workflow. Got my eyes on the hardware you mentioned and might bite the bullet on it. That resolve project file is an eye opener, great to have.
Thanks for your feedback, much appreciated

Have you had any issues using the Resolve project file to conform the original 4k camera footage to create a 4k master? In cases like this I'm assuming there would be card changes during camera recording since the 4k footage will use up cards quickly. So then in Resolve you'd be re-linking the footage? To do this, do you also need to iso record in HD on SSD attached to the ATEM Mini Extreme as well? Would matching timecode be needed for the cameras (in a typical theatre setup there will be different audio delay issues on camera mics, since cameras near stage will have no audio delay, and cameras at back of large theater will typically have audio about 3-4 frames late because of distance)
