fx1E with p+s technik 35 system - incredible!

Re: fx1E with p+s technik 35 system - incredible!

the audio is horrid on the sony's... (which no one has tested the Z1 out yet cause it hasn't been released but I guess this is a fact cause someone said so).

That was me. I believe, please correct me if I am wrong, that both the FX1 and Z1 use the same exact audio compression. In fact I believe it is inherent to the HDV spec so I wouldn't expect any gain _at all_ in the Z1.

Re: fx1E with p+s technik 35 system - incredible!

Hey Shaw,

Nothin' personal... didn't even know who said it actually.  (I feel like I need to apologize for everything I say now)

Fair enough.  I agree with you actually that it's unfortunate that their is audio compression in the HDV format, however when I think of it being described as horrid I don't think that you are givin the cam justice here.  I think of something that crackels and pops like there is an intermittent problem... (a la PD150).  The audio compression is actually very good and even though it is compressed, the compression is very high so there is no real noticiable difference in most applications unless you are doing high end studio stuff. (which again you probably would do externally).  The other thing is that the FX1 and Z1 actually record audio uncompressed in DV mode.  So while I agree that compressed in HDV is unfortunate, you can still record uncompressed via XLR with Z1 in DV mode... so you kind of have 2 options in one.  I wasn't sure if this was communicated to the user as he was requesting the opinion from anyone with direct experience who owned the camera.  Since I actually own it, I thought I would give him my opinion.

Again I mean no disrespect.

Re: fx1E with p+s technik 35 system - incredible!

..sigh.. your perception of things is a little hard for me to understand.. im sorry for that if im misunderstanding you.

the reason that is the title for the section is because this site is mainly for panasonic DVX100 owners operators and enthusiasts. the title of the section is fitting and not negative or personally attacking anyone in any way.

the audio deal was answered above and again is not a personal insult towards anybody.

and lastly. im not trying to intimidate you. im simply telling you to behave yourself. you can be as opinionated as you like.. just dont attach personal or group deragatory statements or insults with your opinions.. believe me, i have better things to do.

Re: fx1E with p+s technik 35 system - incredible!

these cameras use the same compretion in hdv mode , the fx-1 that i never tested and defently something i dont consider to buy is not interesting me a bit , but the z-1 i had the oner to run with the sd -744 side by side .
in hd mode the sound do loose allot , thats not atellephone line but you can hear a hudge difference if you compare it to much better recording system .
in dv mode the z-1 sounding at least as good as the panasionic if not better , since i didnt had the panasonic near buy couldnt make this test
the test wasnt sintific only had been jadge by my ears that brings my bread( and butter) home .
the pb from the sony wasnt match on nle or syncronize in some way with 744 , i checked the same recording that i did with the returns to my mixer with the same headphone amp .
the sony was feed with line level signal and was adjusted 0dbu ref tone , - 6 db on the pre stage -20 dbfs on the mitter , i run my schoeps in very qwite place with sd 442 preamp which is less good then the 744 one but is exeptble as industry standart for eng recording ( i did a few fuiters with that ,so can say it also good enouth for big screan relice)
the sony sounded not much worse what i usially have if iam going staright to beta digital or sony f-900 ( almost the same audio sircuit)
for people who would deal with sony for dv , the camera is a grate improovment over the 170 and maybe the dvx , for people who would be deal with hdv recording ill stronly recomend to go double system ,
of course for these who are dealing with news or low budget doco hd realice it pass , but everithing pass if you dont have money for something better .

Sounds good. (insert handshake emoticon here).

I have clearly have learned one thing here today. The term "hardcore DVX User", though I may fall into the category also, is obviously recieved as a deragatory group insult. :) Can I be a hardcore FX1 user and DVX user at the same time? ;D Big smiley... laugh here.... ok... sorry for all of this. Your right this is a waste of time.

(Some one else accused me of bashing on my other post too so one more appology and I think I'm in the clear)

Re: fx1E with p+s technik 35 system - incredible!

.. ill certainly take the handshake, but just to be clear it was not the fact that you called anyone a hardcore dvxer that was insulting. it was the fact that you said :
you can definately tell who are the biased hardcore Panasonic users on this forum and who are camera ops and people with a good eye for film & video.
the statement strongly implies that those of us who are panasonic fans are not real camera ops , and do not have a good eye for film and video. as a professional i found it both humerous and insulting at the same time.

..anyway, nuff said about all that ..sweeps past under rug ;)

Re: fx1E with p+s technik 35 system - incredible!

I'm coming in a little late on this thread but I always have something to say.   :D

That video is wonderfully shot.  Whomever shot this knows exactly what they are doing (Give rembrandt a brush...). I'm not a gambling man, but I would bet this is not the DVX as is/was specualted earlier in this thread.  At least it wasn't shot in 24p.  It indeed has an inherent 'video' look and feel.  The latitude and shallow DOF really serve it well.

First:

Ranger; I thought we had that understanding regarding your constant jibe at the so called 'DVX Patriots"?  But here we are, a week later and you are still whining about it.  Neil is correct; it has grown tiresome.  I used to enjoy your posts and respect your opinion but as of late I have grown very tired of your constant remarks on the DVX Users and their support of the camera.  Very tired.  It has seriously detracted from any merit you may have, which sucks because I know for a fact you have some skills and something to bring to this community as you have in the past.

I have said before; I'm not apologizing for owning and loving the DVX100.  For me, it is the best possible camera out there for what I am trying to achieve.  This is why I hang out at DVXuser.com; not only for the vast filmmaking discussions that go on, but the simple fact that 99.9 % of us here either own and use the DVX or are planning to get one.   In fact, I am so happy with my DVX that I do have a general take that "sucks to be you if you shoot with anything else..." but I'm not pimping that thought process nor am I getting a commission.  I always say "Shoot Super 8 if that's the format you want to use.  Good for you."

Second:

VideoGuy. You're not in the clear just yet.

Video Guy; what rock did you crawl out from under?  What is all this talk of

"...you can definately tell who are the biased hardcore Panasonic users on this forum and who are camera ops and people with a good eye for film & video."

What does that even mean?  Like NEil stated; I have seen some pure **** from the DVX and I have seen the magic that inpires.  I'll call like I see it no matter the camera.

"However if it was shot with the DVX, all of a sudden the hardcore DVX users will flip and love it."

An unbelievable statement.  I love this piece of work and I don't care if it was shot on HI8.  As mentioned, the Camera Op knew exactly what they were doing; bravo.  It still doesn't change the fact it looks inherently video and not in the 24p realm. (In fact, it looks like really solid XL1 stuff I have seen).

"I see that you think only your opinion around here is fact."

Neil is one of our more respected members and has always been known to be open-minded, unbiased and level-headed.  I assure you, this is not the case with your take.

"Before I get more friendly welcome words from my buddie Neil R."

Let me save Neil some headache on this.  Welcome to the community.  Hang out, give and take, live and learn and be respectful please; this community is grounded in the ability of all of our members ability to be supportive and friendly, professional and courteous.  If you cannot do this, let me know and I'll point you in the right direction.

"To anyone that I have offended with my comments, truely I appologize.  Don't worry, if I am going to get a lecture post Neil R. everytime I have an opinion, I'll post else where.  It's a big world.  (which I'm sure you will be happy) I didn't realized that only experienced people were allowed to take part in "trolling"."

You see, just when I thought you might be on the right path, you start with a nice open apology and end it with a final stab.  This is what women usually do; get that last word in.

It was I who said "I'd buy (but) the DVX..." and followed up with "What are you planning to do with the camera?" That poster never replied back (yet). And within that particular thread you said

"For me there is too much buzz about 24P."

I cannot even respond to that as if that is your take, then you've already missed it.

In closing?  Welcome and feel free to become a part of this wonderful community.  You sound knowledgable and I hope you can contribute your knowledge to the masses.

Now you're in the clear.

Hahaha... now there is a stab :) I actually think I'm the wrong forum. I thought I was in the sony section. :) I think you have now dubbed me the new village idot. I'm not sure to hurt or excited ::) In all honesty it's all good... please don' think I'm being an a$$. It's like I feel I need smileys after evey line.

K for real.

I have seen so many different comments and options from users and clients. I have personally used both cams frequently and I will admit I love the DVX functionality and manual control... destroys Sony FX1 and Z1 bar non.

Here is what I'm not sold on yet, so I'm looking to be persuaded but it's hard if the Z1 (pal especially) hasn't been fully tested for a film look yet. John feel free to add your opnion cause I'm really trying to figure this one out...

I've heard things from both DVX users and Sony user who really bash the other product. I really don't get that. If an application does the job great.

If we talk technical, 24P is the answer to producing film like images which usually has a lot to do with how motion looks. Yes... gamma curve, DOF and a few other things come into play too. Here is what I'm wondering. At 1080i with 1440x1080 res... native 16x9... with a pulldown so it's "seuto 24P", has anyone here directly compared HDV from PAL Z1 simulated to film footage to Panasonic DVX 24P film simulated footage?

I would seem that the sony is not getting any credit for being a potential option for a "film" like image. I agree that the cineframe options in the cam are hokey but if shot in 50i and then transfered, does everybody think the DVX wins hands down, no questions asked?

I was just reading after a post I previously wrote on the other thread that it's what it looks like and not so much what the specs are... which I agree. There has to be pros and cons to each. I hear an awful lot of "24P smashes HDV downcoverted hands down" but even from stuff I have done, most clients can't see the difference. Native 16x9 must give somewhat of an edge to a film like picture if the right 24 frame effect is added and deinterlaced properly. Even when not blown up, how can people claim that the Sqeeze mode on the DVX in 24p is still better that native 16x9 from the sony?

Re: fx1E with p+s technik 35 system - incredible!

You're talking about transferred up to film? No, I'd expect that the additional resolution of the Z1 50i footage would be a significant advantage on a film transfer.

On a television, released on a DVD, the 24p, wider latitude, greater sensitivity, 7 gamma curves, additional picture control options etc. of the DVX gives it an edge over the Sony.

But if you're talking about transferring it up to the big screen, and you light and control your image such that the latitude and sensitivity are taken into account, the FX1/Z1 footage would likely look much sharper than transferred DVX footage.

Re: fx1E with p+s technik 35 system - incredible!

VideoGuy

I am not dubbing you anything other than making it clear that harmony is the preferred modus operandi. It is all good.

Barry

I agree with that assessment and always go back to giving the brush to the right person and the least talked about ingredient: CONTENT IS KING!

Re: fx1E with p+s technik 35 system - incredible!

John, the only thing about your long post. Just don't let your wife read it. :)

Re: fx1E with p+s technik 35 system - incredible!

I love this piece of work and I don't care if it was shot on HI8

And this brings us back to the basics of film or video. Does it worK? Does it tell the story? If it does, what it is shot on becomes secondary in importance. Last spring two of my students and I (I teach high school television and video production, as well as doing event, corporate and educational video) won an Emmy award for a story we did on a soldier stationed in Iraq. The footage from Iraq was shot on a HI8 cam. I would have preferred something much better. But it worked, and it told the story.

But if you're talking about transferring it up to the big screen, and you light and control your image such that the latitude and sensitivity are taken into account, the FX1/Z1 footage would likely look much sharper than transferred DVX footage.

I mostly agree with what you're saying Barry, but wouldn't it likely have problems with artifacting, or would there be a way to avoid that?

Re: fx1E with p+s technik 35 system - incredible!

Cool video! I love Fettes Brot, funky German hip-hop. This new single (called "Emanuela" if you're curious) off the "Am Wasser Gebaut" album is great. If you like it, check out some of their older hits like "Jein". Good stuff!

I love the video concept...simple and funny. It does look a bit like video to me. Like John said, I've seen similar looks from an XL1 with the mini35. I haven't seen anything yet from the FX1 that I haven't seen look nicer on the DVX...but the FX1 is new so I'm sure I will eventually.

There are probably a hundred things that contribute to the "film look" and the camera is only one of them. It's not a magic wand or anything. Frankly, in my opinion the p+s technik 35 is the "incredible!" part of this video, not the FX1.

And whats this BS about people here being biased? I'm a Sony man so if anything I'm biased towards Sony.

Re: fx1E with p+s technik 35 system - incredible!

If you haven't seen anything from the FX1 that doesn't look nicer than the same thing on the DVX, you likely haven't watched it on an HD monitor. FX1 on HD is "in its element" and is startlingly sharp. You may still prefer the filmic look of the DVX and its motion and cinegamma and all, but there's no denying the "wow" factor when you see FX1/Z1 footage on an HD monitor.

As far as artifacting on the bigscreen picture -- well, sure that can happen, but I'm assuming all things being equal. I've seen very clean HDV footage, but I've also seen artifacted footage... the thing is, garbage in, garbage out -- I'm assuming that your HDV footage looks good on tape and looks good on the monitor, so when you transfer it it'll look sharper (and, if all other factors are controlled, probably better) than transferred DVX footage.

But, that assumes all other things are equal, and they rarely are...

Enough of that though. All was peaceful again at DVXopia.

Re: fx1E with p+s technik 35 system - incredible!

Very true Barry. I don't know anyone personally who has an HD monitor/television, and I'm the only person I know even thinking about getting one. I'm sure another year (or less) and that will change.

Sony with it's HDV format is working very hard to change that... as it is to my understanding that Panasonic is as well. Wether DVCPRO HD or HDV, the first time you see Hi Definition video on a High Definition Television you will not forget it. As Barry said it does have a certain "wow" factor to it that you just can't put your finger on. (you may try... I actually reached out to touch the television...)

Barry quote
"On a television, released on a DVD, the 24p, wider latitude, greater sensitivity, 7 gamma curves, additional picture control options etc. of the DVX gives it an edge over the Sony."

I also would have to agree with this. Especially in 4x3 DV, the FX1 is very soft in DV and sufferes a bit from low lighting challanges if not lit properly... (even shooting in HDV 16x9 mode down convert to Widescreen SD DVD... horrible on an HD Set... not bad on a standard 4x3 CRT.)

The Panasonic does defeat the FX1 in 24P SD 4x3 mode hands down.

Assuming all other things are equal, and they rarely are... (great line by the way...) what about the 16x9 squezzed mode on the DVX? I've heard it can potentially rival the qaulity of an FX1 or the XL2 in SD DV 16x9 mode? (which seems weird cause from a technical standpoint due to native 16x9 from FX1 and "seuto 16x9 chips" on the XL2 one would think it shouldn't be possible?)
