i personally wanst that impressed with the footage.. it had a shallow DOF and that was about it. it looked very much like video. ive seen other stuff from the sonys that IMHO was more impressive, and looks much better and more filmlike than this. shallow DOF and selective focus technique in and of itself does not = film or movie look.
It's definitely shot well, but I don't think it rivals Super16. When shot well enough I've seen Super16 rival 35.
There's not much that I can tell about the detail based on this compressed movie. There's no detail in the blacks of the girls skirt, and there's blownout highlights. And WMV has a tendency to hide noise and other unpleasant details.
I'm really curious as to how well HDV is handling the motion. Just going frame by frame in quicktime I think I'm noticing motion artifacting, but it could just be the compression.

From what I see, it just looks like video with good shallow DOF. That's all. The CU looked really nice but most of the wides look like sony hi8.
It was cute!

Like video? Cute?
C'mon BLUESPIDER it was better than cute and it didn't look video at all. That was a great looking (albeit unusual) short.
In a week or so I will probably be ordering the Z1, but even then I will admit that I don't think this music video came from a Sony FX1. It would be reassuring of the camera's potential if it did, but I'm not completely convinced.

In the same vein as my response to BLUESPIDER above, how can you think that clip looked like video?
My gut feeling tells me that this music video was shot with a DVX and I thought it looked great. Over the past year or so, I’ve seen hundreds of submitted clips from the DVX and the “fettesbrot” video could easily fit into the “best of DVX” category. The video looked like nothing I’ve seen from the FX1 to date.
It seems that for some their prejudice of the Sony has clouded their ability to judge sample footage on its merits.

Ranger, I am 100% certain it was shot on the Sony FX1.
That said, I'm not sure I saw the strong video connection either. I DIDN'T like the blown highlights and crushed blacks and generally low latitude of the FX1 though. The DVX would have improved upon this aspect quite a bit.
Well this is my first post to the DVX user forum and I have to say that it's pretty funny to listen to all the hoopla... you can definately tell who are the biased hardcore Panasonic users on this forum and who are camera ops and people with a good eye for film & video.(this was intended to have a smiley inserted next to it and I forgot I pay for it later...no offense specific DVX users... I am one also.)
Overall, I think the video looks great. True, one can't give an accurate statement regarding the technical specs of the video as it is compressed to an internet deliverable format. From the way it's produced and it's overall effect, I find it funny how people rip it up assuming that it's shot with the FX1. However if it was shot with the DVX, all of a sudden the hardcore DVX users will flip and love it. (more lighthearted sarcasm... no offense to anyone.. did not know forum rules yet.. keep reading) Overall all, production wise the vid looks great and I'm sure if we got to view it in HDV (if it was shot with the Sony), it would look incredible. (cause obviously the person who made it knows how to put a vid together... clearly the work is doing the talking here)

Wow, if that came from a FX1 then I'm impressed, because to me it really had that DVX look about it.
I agree, the crushed blacks and low latitude are a definite weakness of the FX1. I really hope the low noise-to-gain ratio and black stretch on the Z1 may address some of those issues.

LOL ... I was thinking that exact same thing.
..ranger
..imho it simply looks alot like video.. good video .. but video.. bspider was right about the CUs looking nice, but the rest looking more video like. it does not look like the DVX normally does and does not look very much like film aside from the shallow DOF. and i did state ive seen more filmic stuff from the same camera. ive seen the DVX look like video too and if youve ever the reviews i the screen grabs /clips section on material known to be shot on the DVX you would know that none of us gush all over anything simply because its shot on the DVX, but in general the DVX handles colors and contrast/lattitude differently and more filmlike than in the clip in question. and after all of your DVX watching, just because you still cant tell the difference doesnt give you the right to start insulting other peoples integrity or their judgement.
for the last time, i am not biased against the sony. i like the camera.. its just not the right camera for me. your constant personal attacks and abrasive personality are becoming very tiresome. I would appreciate it if you could learn to respect other peoples opinions even when they may be contrary to your own. if someone is getting the facts wrong that is one thing, but you cannot strip someone of the right to their own opinion.
and video guy,
" you can definately tell who are the biased hardcore Panasonic users on this forum and who are camera ops and people with a good eye for film & video."
..where do you get this from ..seriously , i dont see one single shred of biased hardcore panasonic rhetoric anywhere in this thread. but if you want to start claiming those who simply thought this looked filmlike are better camera ops and have a better eye for film and video simply based off of the objective comments made here..well .. i honestly find that humerous. statements like that have no background and are simply cannon fodder. keep that sort of trash talk at home.
everyone here has been objective except for you two.

Hi Neil R. Nice to meet you too. I see that you think only your opinion around here is fact. Ok.. well I just had an opinion so thought I would share it. I didn't realize I was going to get a spanking... just pointing out an observation which you obviously don't see so... let's agree to disagree.
Back to the clip...
In all seriousness it would be nice to know what everyone is watching this on. I have a Matrox card that outputs to my projector on the wall. From my seat everthing looks pretty good. Yes there is a few blown out spots, and some shadow detail is not completely there but if you are watchin' on a 17" computer LCD, then it tends to be a little too dark and saturated to view most video properly anyways.
The only part that stood out as being a little weird is the pan down the mountain hill near the end. It almost looks like an auto setting where it iris'd up at the end of the clip when it tilted away from the sky. Before I get more friendly welcome words from my buddie Neil R. and others, does anyone know specific details of this clip... if it was shot with the FX1 or DVX, if it was shot with all natural lighting... (it would be pretty impressive if it was DVX or FX1) I won't express any more "opinions" until further clip details can be provided.
your idea of "pointing out an observation " ..is what others call trolling. youve made 4 posts so far, and the 3 ive read have been looking to instigate in some way or another. not a good way to come to this type of community. your more than welcome here if you can fit your head through the door. meaning you need to get rid of the hot air elsewhere, because this is not the place... now before you go insulting one of the oldest members and moderator like myself or some of the other most active and respected members around here again i caution you to just chill out.
.. the point isnt whether or not the video looked good or not.. the video certainly looked good.. dare i say great. the point is that it looked more like video than film to some of us that watched it. that really has nothing to do with how good it looked. again, i thought it looked like good video.
im fine with us not being in agreement on the matter, but im not fine with you adding personal insults to your method of expressing your opinion.

Ok I'm not sure why you think I'm a hot head but I'll answer your statement from my perspective and you can see my comments are directed at no one specifically an mean no disrespect.
The title to the sony cam section on the forum here is "Well we might as well talk about it.. specially if they pull 24p outta thier hat down the road" This comment to me in itself would be considered "trolling" if that is what it's called. I've owned the Panasonic and the FX1. I really do love them both and when I say hardcore DVX users, I guess you feel as if I'm attacking you personally. I was a hardcore PD150 user/XL1 user/DVX user/FX1 user so... I don't take offense to that an if you find yourself taking offense... then don't... cause if anything I am also poking fun of myself too. Yes, like others sometimes I love my gear a little much, and the day will come where we will all abandon our DVX's and FX1's. I'm just saying that especially with a title like that to the sony section?.. It makes it sound as if Sony implements 24P then they would owe Panasonic some sort of thank you... or everyone will need to come up with a new battle plan to back up why the Panasonic is better... am I wrong on this? It's like broadcasters saying..."Well lets talk about this MiniDV format, cause you know... it's not beta." To me that mentality is very biased but to each his own.

I just saw a post about a guy asking about buying the FX1 or the Z1 and two people just responding right after "I'd buy the DVX100... the audio is horrid on the sony's... (which no one has tested the Z1 out yet cause it hasn't been released but I guess this is a fact cause someone said so)... which again is fine but I'm not sure that helps him out or that those comments were totally unbiased comments, and thus I expressed that in my post. I've worked also in sales for a long time and it reminds me of the time I went to the Sony dealer to ask about the new Panasonic and what he knew about it. His comment.."The Sony PD150 blows that Panasonic away"... I went out the next day and bought the Panasonic.. took it back, showed it too him... we laughed and I've dealt with him ever since.
And lastly as I have heard from others that the intimidation factor from experience users and members has new users not posting. Well that is fine if you are trying to intimidate people to hear it your way, but I can still have an opinion. I'm not here as a "troller". I am another new user following the DV/HDV/DVCPRO technology quest of producing excellent video with whatever is the best tool at the moment, and currently there is a lot of them. DVX, FX1 and now Z1 in this price range.
To anyone that I have offended with my comments, truely I appologize. Don't worry, if I am going to get a lecture post Neil R. everytime I have an opinion, I'll post else where. It's a big world. (which I'm sure you will be happy) I didn't relized that only experienced people were allowed to take part in "trolling".
