FX1 still available?

I heard a rumor today from somone that had a dealer tell him 2 days ago that the FX1 has been discontinued to make space for a newer model. I think that's false. Anyone care to confirm either way?

Mods, please lock/delete if/when appropriate. I don't want to start/spread rumors.

I found a thread in the Sony section over at DVinfo that discusses the FX1 becoming rarer over the past few MONTHES, going out of stock in many places and not beeing replaced.

Turns out there could be some substance to this after all. As someone pointed out, the FX1 has been out for 18monthes, which by Sony's current (annoying) product cyle is actually pretty long.

- Mikko .. hmm...

There were all sorts of rumors like this at NAB, but hey, what would be a camcorder discussion without some rumors, right? So I didn't pay much attention.

But now that you bring it up, I looked on B&H's site, and they say they're back-ordered too.

So, indeed, perhaps there is some meat to the rumor this time?

hahahahahhaha

That could explain why they were priced so cheap on apple's website a while back and apple doesn't show them there anymore.

So how long till we see a replacement? Usually a replacement is worse than the original. Like the HC3 actually has less resolution than the HC1. Some people actually regretted not buying the HC1 when it was available.

Well the hc3 was designed for a completely different market than the hc1, the hc3 is much cheaper.

But i do hope we get a replacement for the fx1, is everyone here sure that sony uses an 18 month product cycle, what was the time in between the vx1000, vx2000, vx2100 etc.?

so... any bets on whe the fx2 will be out

VX2000 was on the market for about three years, and the VX1000 before it was on the market for about three years. So no, there's no guarantee on an 18-month cycle, the HC1 was out for less than a year, wasn't it? You can't predict when they'll replace products based on the calendar.

Yeah, I didn't mean that they have an 18mo cycle. But rather that Sony seems to be replacing camera models faster than Sony comes up with new formats that flop! :P

The TRV900 was out for YEARS! But in the past 2 years it's been replaced by the TRV950, then HC1 (which both had 'pro' counterparts the PDX10, then the A1) and now the HC3. They tend to move prty fast recently, espcially with their "cutting edge" models (which woudl make sence, thoguh it's a same that good models get left out too)

Hey Mikko!

A small correction, if you don't mind. If I recall correctly, I think the TRV950 was replaced by the nifty little HC1000, a 3CCD SD DV camcorder (I have one and I love it!).

I was wondering if the HC1000 (Which my school has 3 of, - we would have 7, but they were discontinued when we wanted to buy 4 more a year after the realase [case in point really].) was part of that progression or just a one off alongside, so I left it out. But yes, I agree, it's a great little Camera, and discontinued far far too soon.

But AMPhotoWorld is also Broadway Photo, and neither of them is an authorized dealer, and neither of them can buy direct from Sony, so that's why I said I wouldn't take what they say as absolutely true because they can't know.

Now, if EVS or some authorized dealer wants to come on and say that it's been discontinued, that we could probably take authoritatively.

indeed lets hope sony does a true 24p next time around- its always puzzled me why the best NLE for 24p is Sony Vegas yet they have no prosumer 24p cameras. Even if it is HDV, true 24p and 16x9 chips and Sonys low light advantage, hmmm... :)

We all would love the next model to have 24p, but it wouldnt really make any sense for sony. I mean, imagine, the FX1 had the same image quality as a Z1, and that already was eating into the sales of the Z1, enough to warrant discontinuation. Imagine another model with the image quality of the Z1, a lower price, and then 24p. Who would want to buy the Z1, with our wihout the XLRs...

fine with me, put 24p in the Z1 I dont care :) Sony needs a 24p prosumer camera, bundle it with vegas and give it some shnazzy BS marketing gimmick like "hollywood in a box"

I was at B&H today and a salesman told me a new Sony HDV camera is coming out in August. He said it was somewhere in between the Z1U and the A1U in price/quality/features. I actually came on this board to see if anyone knew any more about it, as he was pretty vague. I don't know if its true, but why would he tell me that? Personally I am going to wait and see what happens before I buy anything, as August is just around the corner.

Stay tuned...
