I think what has changed is how my IDX batteries are recognized. Now the camera recognizes them as Sony battery and since the warning thresholds are different for Sony and non Sony batteries (as a default non Sony batteries have more strict threshold) it resulted in the camera dying abruptly. I changed the setting and so far so good.
