Future Proof (compositing test)

Re: Future Proof (compositing test)

LOL

Yeah, that dude had some European Punk thing going on; he would fit in nicely in Blade Runner!

I want a NIGHT ONE!

Re: Future Proof (compositing test)

Excellent work! Tracking as mentioned rocked. Nice how the ship was not always the most prominent thing on the screen. Too many people make the effects stage front.

Again, great work. :D

Give us some tech details on the work.

Re: Future Proof (compositing test)

Looks great, obviously.

A couple minor things that would "sell" it even more, I realize you probably didn't overlook these things, since this was just a test, but just in case.

Overall your test was short on foley. Could've used sounds of creaking doors in the beginning, footsteps in the puddles, etc etc. For a moment I thought maybe you'd made a conscious decision not to use any, but then there was the beer can, and the cigarette lighter... soo.. the biggest one missing was the "woosh" that you normally get when a huge ship passes over. Not that you always need one, the absence of that same woosh in Aliens Vs. Predator was the -only- good/interesting thing about that movie, to be honest.

Secondly, another 'sell' would've been a shadow on the guy, as the thing passed overhead.

That's it.

Now, spill your secrets. How did you get that to track? Did you use something like PFTrack, or boujou or...?

Phil

Re: Future Proof (compositing test)

Thanks for the encouragement everyone. The camera was a raw DVX100 no frills, a tripod and a terrible home made galvanized pipe steadycam (DVD Extra - it's leaning against the ventilation fan on the first POV of the ladder to the left).  I had to do a lot of color correction on some shots because I kept forgetting to white balance and the cloud cover was sporadic.

For tracking I used a free program called Icarus that apparently went commercial and is no longer offered free. I didn’t model the ship, I found it on a site full of free models (I’m not that good yet).

Of everything that bugged me, it would be the mismatch of lighting on the ship and in the scene. The diffusion doesn’t match. I had to make some sacrifices since the more lights in a scene the longer ray tracing takes. As it was, some of the close up scenes took almost a day and a half to render. I used Lightwave to animate and render, After Effects to rotoscope, and Vegas for everything else.

I appreciate al the information on this board since that was all I had to go on when learning to use the DVX in the 2 weeks I had it.

I agree the Foley was weak. I recorded the beer can and lighter practically with the camera and have been trying to find other sounds online. I decided to just go with what I had since I couldn't find a good puddle sound (wish I had the camera back).

The absence of a whoosh was intentional, I went instead with thunderous low end bass that most definitely won’t be heard unless you have a sub. Even the sound of the thing taking off sort of makes me cringe, almost too cliché in my book. But hey, whatcha gonna do with free sound effects from the web. ;D

Re: Future Proof (compositing test)

looks very cool man...only thing id recommend is playing with the lighting a bit more, seemed a bit dark to me, the ship, other than that, very advanced stuff! i liked the music too, the low angle shots of the sky were bullseye ;)

Re: Future Proof (compositing test)

Overall it's very well done indeed. The lighting is pretty close. Clouds probably do make it a bit trickier.

Apart from what's been mentioned, the only things I could spot was a slight pulsating on the outline of the head as the ship passes overhead in the final shot. Not sure what it is, but I noticed it so I thought I'd mention it. Also the ship's postion relative to the dude seemed a little mismatched from the back shot cutting to the front shot. It seemed to me from the back shot that the ship's tail had passed behind the head, and then the front shot seemed to show that the ship's tail has yet passed the head.

I'm impressed. I wish I could do something like this. Would love to see more experiments.

Re: Future Proof (compositing test)

I know this was all about the visual effect and the CG ship, but I was pulled in before I knew what the payoff was. Just the beginning: shots, composition, editing - it was clean! Not bad for borrowing a friends dvx and playing around. Yeah right. The only thing that bugged was the ambient sound in the beginning. Looping noise. But then I wrote it off as the approaching ship. hmmm.

Great work. Even without the CG and tracking.

Re: Future Proof (compositing test)

Everyone said it best. So when are you going to work on the sequel? I want to see some action.. Nice work!  ;D

Thanks. :)

I am serious about borrowing the camera. My friend lent it to me since I have wanted one for a while to see how to use it. I read this site for weeks before he suggested I might use it to find out how to operate it. I spent most of the time shooting shutter speed tests and playing with all the settings. I shot this sequence last minute to try editing and composting. This probably took me two weeks of concentrated effort after work. I have been playing with CG for about a year so it's not like this is the first thing I've done, but it is the most complex thing I've tried.

As with the sound, that's my next obsession. Not having the ability to do Foley hurts. I think the sound is far more important than the images, but only having a small window with the camera, and limited resources outside my computer makes it difficult.

Re: Future Proof (compositing test)

Alright guys, here's what really happened. I was walking through downtown Minneapolis when a DVX was thrown from a window by a couple that was arguing about who the baby daddy was.

I picked it up and pressed the power button and randomly waved the thing around. What you see is directly from the camera after 10 minutes of trial and error.

True the ship was added later but I just used some After Effects plug-in. I found the CD in the garbage outside an abortion clinic. ::)

Ya know, no biggie.

Re: Future Proof (compositing test)

I think the tracking, the lighting and the modeling are all extremely realistic.

Very impressive

I have laughed at a few posts here of falsified modesty. Like, "Hey, I'm clinically retarded but whenever I touch a camera, I can cause it to **** liquid gold!"

or, "I 've never touched a DVX or even heard of one before yesterday, shot for like 10 minutes, and here's a fully scored feature with a completely CG main character. It took about an hour for post, what do you guys think?"

Can you let us know what site? Maybe you did... and I didn't get that far yet... but, regardless...

Nice work... really impressed and looking forward figuring out how do put it all together.

As for Icarus, I'm not sure if I still have the installer on my machine. I will check and see if I can put it somewhere.

Quick question to any reading this, if a program was offered for free non-commercial use, then was bought out and is no longer available...is it illegal to share the free program with others? ???

Re: Future Proof (compositing test)

Hmmmmm A modern day dilema. I think I saw an "After School Special" on this one. My theory is; because the software was at one time freely distributed the buyers of the business realize this and will most likely build a new app around the old app. Making changes to it or remarketing it. Older versions of freeware is typically available on some sites. The buyers of the company knew they were buying a freeware business so they realize free versons are floating around. Some may think that because a business bought the rights to the software it is no longer freeware and you are stealing. I think that the new business will release new versions (with support) and givng a friend an older (freeware) version isn't stealing. It might make you want to buy the new version.

Re: Future Proof (compositing test)

great compositing, ditto camera work, you need an editor with or without a story. keep up the work, it could be very good.
