Fuse Blown -- C300 Dead

and amazing results - better than anyone expects. I enjoy seeing the look of surprise and delight!

Pretty much what I hear / see from anyone I show footage to.

FWIW I dont power off using full manual primes. Nothing touches anything so no point.

Not sure here, but many electronics fuses are actually soldered to the board. which can be as much a pain to swap as a capacitor. Hope thats not the case, but certainly could be. It would be a great idea to have a little door to swap in case of this.

It's true of electronic lens mounts in general that you turn the camera off when swapping lenses.

User error, nothing to see here, move along...

This just happened to us in the middle of the shoot. We were switching from a 35mm ZF to a 50mm ZE.

Yea right user error. More like a manufacturing defect. I turn off every time now. But it's 2012 and I shouldn't have to.

HUH, Who are you to tell folks to move along? The last I checked this was a forum for discussing cams and issues. If you dont like it, then you should move along yourself. Oh, and by the way, I have been hot swapping lenses for years, so no, it's not all cameras.

I'm glad we have a forum to discuss these issues. We had no idea what had happened to the camera on set until dinner break where I had a chance to get on the internet and research. (We are shooting on two C300s)

^This guy doesn't own a C300.

What I don't understand is how changing lenses with the camera on can REALLY blow a fuse. Does anyone care to explain?

My wager is that it's like anything electronic, in that crossing pins on accident by switching the glass out really fast will blow a fuse or overload a circuit.

I think Noel is right that if you're not using EF primes then it's definitely no big deal, but if you are I do think it's something that needs to be told to everyone operating the camera. It may be a no brainer to switch the camera off in between lens changes, I haven't read about a single blown fuse in an Epic with EF mount (electronic mount) at all, and I know people aren't switching that off to change glass.

Me, personally, I've never done it and I probably wouldn't even remember to do so. Maybe the new batch will get a fix (if they see fit too.)

And who were the storm troopers to tell Obi Wan to do so?

You can hot-swap lenses with no electronics contacts; it is the one with electronics in them that expose a risk.

Like trying to plug in a microphone while phantom power is enabled.

What, what! Seriously? We're not supposed to do that? I've always done that.

It's not a huge risk with XLR cables because all of the pins make contact at the same time. The real trouble is running phantom signals through a patch bay or TRS jacks and then plugging in while hot, as that causes the contact points to cross momentarily as the connection is made. That being said, it's good form to turn phantom off before making or breaking microphone connections.
