C100: Funky video problem! C100 Mark I

Hi guys ....

I have recently (like today) found this problem with some of my footage. There's some corruption in the pictures at the top of frame. I haven't changed any settings and my SD cards are reasonably new. I have attached screen shot from an interview. It pops up about every five minutes for about five to ten frames. Any thoughts? I'm starting to get worried.

Cheers

Hadyn

Are these exports from Premiere or Final Cut? I ask because I've noticed that VLC will introduce this kind of artifact when previewing sometimes, usually at the beginning of playback.

I'm pretty sure they are approved. It's a Strontium SDXC. I've used it for a couple of months with no problem before.

This is a really weird suggestion but years ago I had just gotten a new Mac Mini to edit with and installed after market RAM. I noticed during playback in FCPX, I would get weird artifacts like this but if I played the footage back from the camera only, these artifacts were not present. It turns out I had bad RAM in my Mac Mini and it was corrupting the footage while it was being imported.

I would definitely check the footage in-camera to see if the issue is present there. If it's not, I would re-import the footage into a new FCPX Library and see if the artifacts appear in the same spots.

Thanks

Hi Dustin .... I did install more RAM about six months ago. I checked the footage in the camera and it appears fine. I guess this means I have to uninstall the new ram?

It's possible... Can you test with one stick of RAM at a time and try to recreate the issue? When I had this happen, if I re-imported the same footage, I would still get distortion but it would show up in a different set of frames. It's like a portion of the RAM is corrupt and when that is used, the issue happened.

To the OP: If the files are AVCHD and you are using FCPX 10.4, what you are seeing is a known problem in that version of FCPX (and version 10.4.1). I have been able to work around the problem by transcoding the clips after importing, but I haven’t had extensive use of AVCHD since upgrading to FCPX 10.4. However, others have reported problems even after transcoding. Some users on the Apple Support Community for FCPX have reported that transcoding the AVCHD clips to ProRes, using the app Kyno, prior to importing into FCPX, fixed the problem. I haven’t tried it myself. Kyno offers a 30 day trial, so it’s worth trying.
