Full Group Photo - Need Help!

Just got a T2i and a friend of mine asked me to take a full band picture on a rather large stage. A couple of questions came into mind:
1) Where would you shoot this picture from? Tall ladder in middle of auditorium or balcony (balcony about 200 ft from stage)
2) What lens would you use for each? (please keep this within the moderate price range ;-)

BTW there are about 180 people total on the stage wearing white jackets. Lighting is pretty decent and I am bringing some of my own as well. Stage is about 75-80 ft wide

Thanks for all of your input. Recommended settings would be appreciated as well!
 
It's pretty hard to answer this question without having more details. For example, what kind of lighting are you referring to? What's the backdrop (what's behind the band)? Any side lights? Do you have control over the auditorium lighting? What lenses do you have? What lights do you have?
