Fujinon 8.5-119 f1.7 killer GH2 Lens?

There seems to be an unlimited supply of these lenses on ebay, as SD ENG cameras are put to bed. But it is rare to have the adapter included. $600 - $300 for the adapter = $200 for the lens. That is an ok price for that lens. I bought one for under $100, but the price of them has seem to have gone up a bit.

It is f1.7, but for a big-sensor lens, it needs the 2x extender, which will add about 2 stops, which would make it a f3.3 lens. That also means it is actually a 17- 240mm lens for your application.

Many people like the Fujinon and Canon ENG 2/3" lenses. The mechanics of the focus, iris, and zoom is nice. Some people also value the servo zoom function, which is buttery smooth (requires a power source and custom cable). It is not as sharp as the Panasonic lenses.

I don't understand why it needs a 2x extender? or do you mean the 2x crop factor of the GH2?

And do you know how much the servo zoom function costs or does it also come with the lens? Thanks!

Regardless of how the lens is characterized by that ebay listing as "for Panasonic AF100 GH1, GH2..", it is actually designed for use with 2/3" sensors. To cover a 4/3" sensor, the 2x extender that is built into the lens must be used or you will have severe vignetting. The oddly shaped part of the lens on the back with the "14x" on it is the 2x extender that can be flipped in and out.

The servo function is built into the lens. You can't see it in the picture on that listing, but it is there. Look at other Fujinon Ax.... lens listings and you will see a big appendage on one side. That is the servo zoom function.

[edit] you can see the servo unit in the pictures lower in the listing.

i think this lens would be awesome for weddings...but I don't know if I want to shell out all that money for such an old lens.

I was thinking I just buy the Panasonic 20mm f1.7 and the Nikkor 35mm f1.8 and be fine. That will come around the same price as the Fujinon lens. What do you guys think?

I wish they had more footage of this lens...because I do not know how sharp or soft the lens really is.

ETC in 1080p mode is 2.6x, which is on top of the 2x crop. So the wide end is more like 40mm'ish in 35mm equiv.

wait is there a way to use ETC mode without the 2x crop extender?
huh? both are different functions and don't need the other to operate.
The listing explains all the different ranges you could get with ETC or 2x Extend, or both together. Just read it

I own neither but you supplied a ref on another page that shows the zoom is very compact but is for a 1/2 inch sensor. This may vignette even on a Pentax Q, but probably won't. On a GH1, it will vignette badly. The 1:1 mode or whatever, I own an ep-1 and not a Panny yet, may help with that, but I recommend against it. Some CCTV lenses are made for 4/3 sensors, but I think most are for macro use on assembly lines and may not focus on infinity. The combinations of which lens will work with which camera are now known and you are most unlikely to discover an unused combo? Therefore, stick to those users who report success with their lens? Sorry, but other wise you will waste time and money. Ed Lee is an expert in these matters!
