Fuji X-T3 released

According to post #1300, Fujifilm may have some news tomorrow (or maybe even today for a lot of us in the USA), so maybe we'll see.

I find it depends on context and BG. If I am shooting gimbal and running around following a moving subject, I barely notice it. But get them to stand still to shoot an interview or shoot a talent with my motion control rig and you really see it all over the place. It almost ruined a big thing I was shooting for Netflix. Thankfully our A camera was the C200 on sticks so the editor used that mostly but I looked at all of the footage and if I would have been editing it, it would have frustrated the hell out of me as a lot of good emotional moments where the talent was telling a story where I would have wanted to cut back and forth between the two cameras were ruined by the focus pulsing.

Tell me about it. I was stupid enough to use it as an A cam on a shoot. It's all a learning process :/

I've been fortunate enough to not experience this yet, but I'm not a huge AF user. Seems like tracking settings may play a part. Specific lenses, too, maybe? I'm mostly using the 16-55, sometimes the 8-16.

Not to beat up on Fujifilm too much but, if they can't fix the AF problem in a hurry, a Jeffrey Kessler wannabe will soon start collecting signatures.

If I can get legit manual focus control of my x-mount lenses through the Ronin-S, that would be a genuine game changer for my gimbal adventures with the camera. Not having to just cross my fingers and pray that the autofocus works, would be a wonderful improvement.

The Ronin SC can get manual focus control as well as stop/start record. Thats a big win for me. Wish they had announced a new firmware update though. Hopefully this month!

Maybe I need to practice more but the Fuji XF lenses are focus by wire so manually trying to focus with hand on barrel or even with a physical FF control is an exercise in frustration.
If the gimbals with focus control gain electronic focusing control, that could possibly be a good compromise until they get the AF fixed to work properly.

Some of you may already know this, but for those that don't, the X-T3 allows you to change the response of the focus ring to linear for more predictable results when manually focusing for video.
I think for still photography, it's advantageous to keep the setting as is so the focusing speeds accelerate and decelerate with the speed you turn the ring.
For video when you are trying pull focus manually the linear setting helps a ton!
I'ts not 100% perfect, if you have a lens gear on the lens and a follow focus unit and repeat a move over and over it will loose the exact focus distance.
The point is the lens behaves in a predictable manner in linear mode, making it more usable.
You can also change the focus ring direction so you can be comfortable regardless of which way you are use to turning to focus.
The micro focus hunting is a real issue and a firmware update is needed.
That being said you can reduce the both how frequently the micro hunts happen and how severe each individual hunt is by reducing the tracking sensitivity all the way down.
It may seem counter intuitive but it really does help. You can adjust tracking speed depending on the situation, you may want it slower for narratives, faster action etc.
I've had a couple people ask me about tracking sensitivity vs tracking speed in person so I figure it may be helpful to mention it here also.
Tracking sensitivity adjusts how quickly the camera tracks a subject or focus area, tracking speed adjusts how fast the lens changes focus from one focus point to the next.
Hope this helps!

First, DJI just released a cable that allows video start/stop, autofocus and shutter control on X-T3.

Second, Fujifilm announced during X Summit that there will be firmware updates to enhance gimbal and drone connectivity (control of other parameters like exposure, not just start/stop trigger).

Meant to say can, rather than can not.

I don't have the camera in front of me at the moment to confirm it but I believe you can set a custom button to engage and disengage focus assist. I don't think you can set it to engage and then automatically disengage when you hit record.

Thanks. I have it set to engage when I touch the focus ring and turn off with the back button. Which works when the camera isn't recording...
