Fuji X-T3 released

I tried to love an FS5 MkII... but the low light performance is still pretty meh. It gets noisy very quickly. I'm also still not fond of the Sony green shift on everything. I ended up returning it and getting a C200.

The C200 looks really nice. Gotta hand it to Canon, they find really good niches.

The Fs5mkii is more for video shooters than film makers, if that makes sense. It is a tiny light weight camera that works with almost everylens you could want, does every function you could want, with every frame rate you could want, and lasts on tiny batteries, and the image gives better cameras a run for the money. Did i say it was tiny? The thing packs with a drone into a small backpack, and you can throw a mirroless b-cam in there too.

However, so many new cheap tiny cameras coming out with good HFR, and that means the Fs5 is no longer an obvious choice. Which is a good thing... right?

The FS5 definitely has a "video" look compared to BM/Canon, Arri and even Panasonic (Although the BMPCC 4K seems to be the exception) But it seems like that aesthetic is becoming more widespread in documentary/reality shooting these days. I think PBS and their Sony preference has helped push it.

So true. Sony and Panasonic have had a long history with great doco style cameras. They still make the best all in ones.

I am liking these coiled cables for tripod work.

Will keep an eye out for right angle micro hdmi options for anything on themove

Also, not sure if anyone else mentioned this, but the grip has an AC in and it only charges batteries when the camera is turned off. Looks like a dummy battery is still the only way to go for extreme battery power or extended run times. I was hoping i could just run the camera from a plugin. Not the case. Unless i am missing something.

Actually FS5 is better than C200 in low light. Ive tried it myself. But I don`t shoot slog on the FS5 instead I made a custom profile that looks like graded slog3.

I'm pretty sure the DC input on the battery grip will power the camera directly without any batteries in it. At any rate, it definitely bypasses the internal batteries if you're using an external battery or mains power.

Anyone using the Sound Devices Mixpre3 with the XT3?

I found this thread, but wondering more about any possible quircks with the mixpre3/xt3 combo
http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?362992-Let-s-hear-some-user-feedback-on-the-MixPre-3/page2

I have those and also Ninja V. I can not get the timecode signal from xt-3 to MixPre. No matter If I try to route the HDMI signal thru Ninja or directly from Fuji to MixPre, timecode just doesn't come thru. It works fine with Ninja V

Thanks. Manual seems to indicate as you say.

When i tried it, i had no batteries in the camera. I will try it again with batteries.

With no batteries and just the AC adapter connected, a low battery warning flashes, and the camera shutsdown.

I would have liked having the ability to forego batteries entirely. Though, as long as the AC in can power the camera, with batteries, that is also pretty awesome!

When googling the extended grip manual, there is a search result which gives most of the directions from the manual, which kind of implies that the ac adapter only charges, but a quick look into the full user manual indicates that power is supplied to the camera. The page from the full user manual:

The XT3 doesn’t produce SMPTE timecode, as far as i know. Should just be able to ‘sync’ and pass through, but there is no time code signal.

In the manual around pg 153, there are instructions on setting the hdmi output resolution, and also turning on whether the camera controls the start/stop record signal.

And then on pg 152 it explains the option settings for the hdmi out resolution:
- 4K always on
- 4K record and HD standby
- HD always on

(EDIT - see my later post. Ignore these. You probably know the difference anyway, i was just trying to clarify what we were talking about by timecode and sync in this mirrorless world.)

If you want SMPTE timecode, consider Tentacle.

I may be misunderstanding you.

The term ‘sync’ in the video/audio world sounds technical, but is actually kind of vague.

- SMPTE time code (the time code, the one everyone is always talking about)
- Genlock (possibly the original “sync”)
- clock (every player and recorder has some sort of internal clock)
- time stamp (the time counter thingy on the screen)
- time code (the generic or general term. The one everyone understands, but gets mixed up with everything else)

Sync’ing could be related to any one of these different tools.

The XT3 should be able to signal that recording has begun to the mixpre3. I doubt they are actually “sync”d, but the files should be close enough that the time stamps are similar in the edit. Though with longer takes, there may be drift. I’ll test this out tomorrow.

Sound Device would have to implement Atomos HDMI/Timecode Protocol in order to be triggered by XT3.

Upon reading the MixPre manual, it will ‘sync’ with hdmi timecode, as @timtuun mentioned, so long as the camera is exporting timecode.

Pg 36 Mixpre3 manual:

Just might have to turn on the timecode out option.
Pg 157 xt3 manual:

Unfortunately I could NOT get it to work. I can get the XT-3 to output the timecode as I can see it in the Ninja V. However, there is nothing on MixPre. Also, I could not get the HDMI start/stop to work with MixPre that works fine with Ninja V.
