FS700 Highlight Aliasing and Color Fringing - SONY NEEDS TO FIX THIS!

I'm definitely going to write Sony later today and link them to this thread as well as Tony's article

http://www.nextwavedv.com/sony-fs700-highlight-aliasing-and-color-fringing-sony-needs-to-fix-this/

I've noticed this issue for a long time and have just lived with it'; but I had no idea it was so easily fixed on all the other cameras (C300, RED, F5 / F55). So it's not because Sony cannot fix this problem, but because they choose not to fix this problem. Hopefully they'll choose to fix it as the FS700 has got some new stock with the 7Q. My director friend just bought one because of the upcoming 7Q.

+1, its been evident since day one Sony crippled the fs700, even the early testers promoting the camera kept quiet to protect Sony about this issue. I'm getting ready for pretty big Job and can certainly justify getting another camera and I can tell you this, Sony is not in my sights. No matter how good the F5 seems I just can't shell out any More money to Sony. It's a shame they could've had me for life. The fs700 is a remarkable tool, however Sony (I guess) tying to protect their higher tier cameras lost me as a future customer. It's a shame. Thanks

The most unfortunate thing is that with the additional cost of upgrade, the 4K recorder and adapter the FS700 comes very close in price to the higher end cameras. So it'd be expected that FS700 users are treated equal concerning features and firmware upgrades.

Well one it's 1.5 years old and it isn't the CineAlta line. I'm afraid the 4k path was more a marketing gimmick for those who wanted to feel safeguarded or future proofed.

I don't see Sony giving a hoot about it.

As it is us F5/F55 owners have our own set of issues we're trying hard to hammer out with Sony.

Sony primesupport replied my inquiry about this with these words:

"Concerning the image you sent, I’m afraid that this is yet another characteristic of the type of sensor these cameras use, this can be ameliorated by using the ND filter. This only occurs when there are straight lines or objects in the pathway of strong light sources, if you film window blinds with light coming through this phenomenon will be visible there as well. "

And when I asked if there was plans to fix this:

"There are no firmware updates planned to change this at the moment.

Kind regards,

Marco C.
Engineer - PrimeSupport Operations"

Hey Essami, can you post the e-mail address for Sony Prime Support? I looked on the 2 links provided earlier by another forum member, but not sure which e-mail to send it to.

Thanks,

Gene

You might also want to send the petition to:
"Martinez, Juan (Park Ridge)" <Juan.A.Martinez@am.sony.com>
Senior Product Manager
Sony Electronics

He is heavily involved in the FS700.

I updated the petition with Juan's email. I was looking for it around the web. Thanks for posting it.

Guys you need to really spread the word.

Perhaps contact Kao at Nofilmschool and see if they'll do a follow up article on it. Also go to any existing articles on it and post the details of the petition and whatnot in the comments sections.

Also as per my post # 5 has anyone actually tried shooting with a picture profile and changing MATRIX to FL MODE, or other modes?

ah, if only we had proper matrix control.

but with the controls available, yeah, it's present in all picture profiles and gamma curves.

On the F3 FL mode (fluorescent mode I think??) was the only one I could use to reduce it. Man when I first saw that same issue on the first F5 images coming out I seriously almost fainted.

Good luck on the petition guys and getting things to change. I hope it does, it would really be a shame if not.

in a dream world, Sony would also add ECS (or more variable) shutter speeds and perhaps some more ISO/gain presets while they're at it. but clearly, that's just dreaming...

all I can say is, thank god for the Odyssey 7Q. it can't arrive soon enough.

Fortunately the worst of this issue will almost definitely be avoided by accessing the RAW bayer stream using the CD7Q or R5. Should also fix the annoying primary colored highlight issue which is, in my mind, perhaps an even worse issue also present in the FS100, FS700, and F3. Actually come to think of it, does anyone know if S-log2 and the REC709 800% gamma fix the primary colored highlight issue where bright reds turn yellow, blues turn cyan, etc?
