FS700 discontinued?

Hello,

Will the Sony FS700 be discontinued any time soon with the introduction of the FS7 and now the FS5 ? Why is still the FS700 so expensive when it is a 4-year-old camera ?

And what about the FS100 ? Why no FS100 mkII yet?

What are your thoughts? Thanks.

Here's how this formula works:

Sony lowers the price (already done). If the camera continues to sell well enough to justify keeping it in production, the FS700 will still be manufactured. If not, they may lower it again (or not, depending on their costs to manufacture & stock inventory). Otherwise they will discontinue it.

I personally don't believe the price will drop further. So if people still buy it at this price -- which is a hell of a deal -- then the camera will remain in production. Sony won't stop selling something consumers wish to buy.

The "Raw 4K ready" version (700R) was $8,000 throughout 2014. Now, it's $4,000. That would make for a pretty steep discount.

As to its future, it'll obviously be discontinued ... at some point. And that point would depend on what their accounting and marketing departments report. It needs to make money - duh - and it ought not cannibalize the FS5 and FS7 sales, two cameras which are also capable of 4K raw recording (FS7 with the attachment and FS5 at a future date, yet to be revealed). My hunch is that, once FS5 Raw comes out, FS700 days are numbered. I assume the FS5 Raw announcement will be around the NAB'16, with the deliveries commencing four-to-six months later.

As others have said, it's certainly not expensive, and will be discontinued whenever Sony feels like it.

The humble old FX7, an HDV camcorder from 2006, is still selling new at B & H (though I don't know whether it is still in production or if they're just clearing old stock).

The FS700 still has plenty of life in it, especially at its lowered price, both in 4K and HD production environments.

Yeah, the lower price is super tempting.

I'm curious - I realize that with the FS700R you can record 4K to an external recorder. My question is, are the AXS-R5 Recorder & Odyssey 7Q the only options available for this?

How does the FS700R perform in low light?

For R5, you need a Sony digital interface. For Q7/+, you need a Raw Sony license. It should also work with Aja Ki Pro Quad. I'll defer on any license questions there.

Pretty sure you are not going to get RAW out of it to the Aja Pro Quad....just the 8bit signal.
The external recorder has to be able to handle the 2K or 4K Raw Sony video stream to get better
than that. The Odyssey 7Q has a neat trick, and besides recording the Raw, can converts the
Raw signal on the fly, and record into 1080HD, 2k or 4k Pro Res. And it can do it for a variety of
frame rates, letting you record high frame rates for slow motion. The only other recorder that I am
aware of that can record the Raw Sony video stream, is the Atomos Shogun. I think it also records into
10bit Pro Res, but can only do it up to 30fps, so no high frame rates. On the plus side, no license to buy
for the Shogun either.

Ki Pro Quad can get 4K Raw out of C500.

Q7/+ can also get raw out of C500, with the Canon Raw license.

So, there's probably some way to get Raw out of FS700 into KPQ as well.

It's probably not a highly relevant undertaking, however, given that Shogun and Q7+ can do it for less - KPQ is now $3,000 - while also offering a solid monitoring option.

While in theory perhaps it is possible for the KiPro Quad to be able to interpret the FS700 RAW data, convert it to video and record it in Apple ProRes, in practice the device does not do this. While I cannot speak for AJA, if it doesn't do it at this point I would expect it to be doubtful that it would do it in the future.
