FS7: FS7 Vs A7R II Vs A7S II

I made a short but significant test between FS7, A7R2 and A7S2.

I set the same parameters for all cameras: S-Log 2, native ISO, detail at 0, S-Gamut, etc.
FS7 and A7R2 in Super 35, A7S2 in FF.

I used the Atomos Shogun external recorder (ProRes HQ UHD) for all cameras.

Three different exposures for each camera:
f / 2.0 - f / 5.0 - f / 8.0

Lens: Prime Circle 25 mm f / 2.0

Exposure reference: f / 5.0 for all cameras (I used a middle gray card). IRE values corresponding to about 40%

No post.

Please download the TIFF frame grabs taken from the original footage.

Enjoy!

P.S.
The focus is on the tie

My conclusion is that in that conditions they're are very similar. What would be more useful are wide dynamic range scene and something shot with people in the frame.
FS7 was in CineEi or Custom?

What I would like to see are also scenes where FS7 would be shot with Slog3 and A7SII with Slog3 as well. To see how close you can match them together.

I didn't realize the A7SII had Slog3... I'm a much bigger fan of Slog3 than Slog2, and I'd love to be able to capture 4K without *needing* the Odyssey7Q+ (don't get me wrong, the footage is great, it can just sometimes be bulky!) and Slog3 would possibly match better with the FS7. Although I don't suppose the A7SII has the CineEI color space, does it?

S35 RII should have the best resolution and the color accuracy ... and the worst rolling shutter.

SII should have the best ISO performance.

FS7 should have the best workflow.

Although I don't suppose the A7SII has the CineEI color space, does it?

Neither the A7s II, nor FS5, have CineEI but they do have SLog3, & SGamut3.cine.

And while neither supports LUTs they do have a feature Sony calls Gamma Display Assist that can be applied to the EVF & LCD so the Log can be viewed in Rec. 709.

Not sure how Gamma Display Assist works, but imagine the image reflects the Log's base ISO & if the camera is deliberately overexposed the image will look washed/hot.

My conclusion:

the two new A7 are incredible.

With both you can do everything.

Roger Spottiswoode, the director of "Tomorrow Never Dies", will use the A7R2 and the A7S2 for his new film.
Great news!
