FS7: FS7 successor (rumours/expectations)

But then I am coming from the simple perspective of using regular off the shelf LUTS, rather than roll your owns, so I can see the value in carrying those. Doesn’t need a new camera though, surely? Simple software tweak would suffice.

So, according to rumour, Sony will reveal a new pro camcorder at IBC (Sep 14th). If it would be a new FS-series camera, what do you expect/hope to see?

I can’t see them replacing the FS7II just yet. But there’s a big price gap between the FS5II and the FS7II now occupied by the original FS7 and maybe in that gap they could squeeze something in and discontinue the FS7? But what?

My big hope is that they finally bring a FF camera to the FS-series... maybe by having not as robust codecs as the FS7II and limited high frame rates it could carve itself nicely in there?

Whatever they do I hope it’s a new sensor and some of the innovations in AF and IBiS from the A7 cameras...

A new sensor (better high ISO, better DR, top notch AF, better colors) in a small FS5/EVA1 sized body.

But with the full capabilities of a FS7/XDCA body.

I want to add one more thing to the list. User replaceable Front filter (IR) glass behind mount in front of the ND-Filters. I've now scratched it twice and had it repaired. First time Sony did it free, the second time was on me.

How did you manage to scatch it twice, let alone even once? I can't imagine how that could happen without being really careless.

Very easily Doug when working events where things move quickly with the camera. I'll switch lenses a lot of times during the event and unfortunately after being careful after the first time 3 years ago, I scratched it again rushing to mount the lens I needed at that time.

yep its easy to scratch (mine is perfect) but last weekend I was swapping lenses while turning (to sustain sound continuity) - it doesnt feel safe at all.

usually my sensor is protected by my speedbooster but for boring reasons I wasnt using it that day.

Now that sounds like a dream, but I’m having a hard time seeing that camera in a spot between the FS5II and FS7II. I’d probably get it though even if it was closer to FS7II in price...
My problem with S35 is that Sony isn’t making any S35 lenses... also IBIS would also be a must to me as they also seem more or less to have stopped making OSS lenses...

Capture premium pictures with the world’s first 2/3-inch 4K CMOS sensor with global shutter technology that eliminates the ‘jello effect’ and banding noise. This allows the HDC-3500 to capture pristine 4K images with exceptionally low noise (-62dB), impressive sensitivity (F10 at 1080/59.94p or F11 at 1080/50p) and high dynamic range, while achieving the ITU-R BT.2020 broadcast standard wide colour space. It’s teamed with a specially developed LSI Digital Signal Processor that fully realises the extraordinary imaging power of this new sensor.

Well that is kinda cool? Not for me though! But for someone out there.

I’ve got a feeling that fs7 successor will be full frame with great AF. Why? Because then they’ll be able to sell more own lenses instead of bleeding to Canon/Nikon mounted lenses with speedbooster inbeetwen.

Please Sony just make fs7 lighter, give few tweaks here and there and I’ll happily invest in a new camera.

I can see myself changing to a FS5 body with FS7 specs... But not for a premium price.

If it would the same price as fs7 mk1 I would invest.
It’s all hopes and dreams that we will see it soon though. FS7(II) is such a successful camera used everwhere that I don’t think they’ll kill hen laying golden eggs anytime soon.

Here are my thoughts...

Sony just came out with FS5ii (minimal upgrades from FS5i) which leads me to believe they are holding off for something in the prosumer / smaller body lineup (probably a new replacement to A7Sii). This leads me to believe they don't want to come out with something too good right away that would diminish FS7 sales (their bread and butter for mid level professional crowd). They will almost have to drop a new camera in between FS7ii and Venice as the F5/F55 are essentially becoming obsolete from a higher resolution workflow standpoint (4k-8k).

The cameras I see are...

1. Something to replace the F5 (say a smaller version of the Venice) which will fit right between the FS7ii and the Venice. Smaller package than Venice and FS7ii with a modular body. Full frame to take advantage of / sell more Sony lenses and be more compatible with other brands full frame cinema lenses like (CP.2-3, CN-E, Sigmas, etc.) that are popular in the more professional industry. The camera will do 6k raw like the Venice as they almost have to in order to compete with lower end Red's and Kinefinity's (and require the raw recorder per the usual to boost revenue as a necessary ad-on) but it will essentially be a smaller stripped down version of Venice that will be priced a bit higher than FS7ii but will obviously be worth it and priced just right to get FS7ii owners to sell and upgrade. This will take care of all the FS7/FS7ii owners out there who want something with higher resolution, better frame-rates, better raw codecs, and will most likely have dual-iso to compete with Red's (Scarlet-W / Gemini) and will combat the new Kinefinity's coming out.

2. A7siii or A9s will definitely be coming soon. The indie crowd and instagramer's / youtubers touting Ronin-s and Zhiyun Cranes are a huge evolving and growing market. Probably a bigger and more profitable markets than people willing to purchase 20k cinema cameras. We would be fools to not recognize that this camera is coming and it is going to be a big deal. Canon and Nikon are way behind in the mirror-less game and Sony is just sitting patiently waiting to slam them all. They will also have to do something to combat the Black Magic Pocket Cinema Camera 4k which has excellent specs as well (4k/60p and raw). Sony A9s (we will call it) will have a 5k sensor as that is easily achievable with a full frame sensor, same low-light capabilities, will shoot some form of 10-bit internal repackaged codec, and will probably export 12-bit raw to recorders for Prores Raw. It will do 5k/60p and 4k/120p and will replace the FS5ii and I believe it will be coming next year. It is going to simply be the 1DXCii and Black Magic Pocket Cinema Camera 4k killer and yes be prepared because it is going to piss us FS5 / FS7 owners off.

3. Then finally once the dust has settled and we have all got our jealousy tantrums out of our system will we see a new FS5/FS7 which will be a stripped down better version of the FS7ii and will be placed in between the new mirror-less handheld (A9s or whatever it will be called) and the new replacement to the F5 (Say F9) lower end Venice. It will be priced right where the FS7ii is now. Smaller body. Will be full frame again as I thoroughly believe full frame cinema cameras are the future. It will also be full frame once again to take advantage of better lenses, increase Sony lens sales, and get rid of all the Sony guys using canon lenses with Speedbooster's (like me lol). It will have excellent autofocus to kill C300 sales and It will also have 5k/60P and 4k/120 but it will be 16-bit to combat scarlet-w and Raven.

This is what I think is coming but I think it will be at least another year until we see any of this and if not.... SONY I HOPE YOU ARE LISTENING.... because this is what I think it is going to take to combat (1dxcii / Black Magic Pocket Cinema 4k), (Scarlet W / Kinefinity Terra), and (Gemeni / Kinefinity Mavo).

Just my two cents...

I see two likely options that I'd hope to see:

FS7mk3 with a FF sensor, or a FS5mk3 which is a real update with F5 specs (including TC I/O, another SDI output, internal raw, and more) that in the process kills off the FS7 and F5 cameras.

Don't forget the Panasonic Varicam LT!

It is positioned above the FS7, but is much much cheaper than a VENICE, yet beats the pants off a F5/F55.
