FS7: FS7 RAW woes & data distribution between: 12-bit RAW, 16-bit RAW, & 10-bit S-Log

As a fan of [mildly] compressed raw and an FS7 user I was disappointed to learn things were not good in the FS7 external raw camp. I was seriously considering purchasing the XDCA unit, as raw capture would have been ideal for adding lustre to certain projects and would have allowed the FS7 to cover all my basic requirements.
However, it would be far more interesting to see if Sony could add internal compressed raw to the camera. The following paper, although written some time ago, does hint at the benefits and feasibility for a system architecture built around CFA processing and H.264 encoding.

We can argue until we are blue in the face as to whether Sony would ever do this (in a firmware update), but if they are concerned about sales in their mid-range and want to sell more reasonably priced pro kit, this may just be a good answer. It certainly would be for me.... ;)

As discussed earlier I'm pretty sure they cannot add internal compressed raw recording due to the patents held by Red.

I think it's compressing the file wrapper a sopposed to th data itself. Or something. Blackmagic say it is still 1:1

The FS5 is getting RAW according to some internet chatter I read today, I hope they plan to fix it on both FS7 and FS5 cameras.

Worth noting (for others, because I'm sure Dennis that you have read that) is that chatter is about INTERNAL raw.

Yes internal, but I doubt very much Sony will displace the CineAlta line of F cameras (F5/F55) by including internal RAW in 16-bit. Likely 12-bit for "marketing" reasons, speed, size, etc.. ? Don't you think?

Oh yeah, it definitely will be handicapped and HD only maybe? But if they'll do internal 4K raw on FS7 12bit... I'm ready to pay extra money for this. Sure, I would prefer 16bit with choosable compression ratio, but I guess it would be too much to process and record internally.

I just spoke with Juan Martinez of Sony. This was a mistake of poor wording in the Sony announcement. The FS5 will get simultaneous FS RAW output and internal video recording. No internal RAW recording for the FS5 or FS7.. There will be a corrected version coming from Sony.

Well correct me if I'm wrong but Sony 4K in 16-bit is 960mpbs @ 24p which is around 120MB/s. But for FS5/FS7 it would probably be 12-bit internal (if it were to exist) so 25% less data at approximately 720mbps or 90MB/s, and that's at 3:1 RAW compression. Sony could do 10:1 compression and it'd be another 3 times smaller.

No sweat for today's SD cards.

For a while I advocated 12-bit 3:1 over 16-bit 10:1 on Sony forums, and people made fun of me. But now given the limitation of 12-bit for 14 stop sensor, I'm not sure I'd want 12-bit 3:1 over 16-bit 10:1 anymore.

But maybe with any camera (ok except A7xx) trying to shoot those bottom few stops should be avoided?

Yup agreed. Unless Sony fundamentally changes their 12-bit raw implementation it has zero place in the FS7 and FS5, especially in a compressed version - and that's assuming they are even allowed to have internal compressed raw (re the previous Red patent chats)
