Hey all,

Very simple question actually:

Has anyone ever used the R5 recorder to record ProRes (not raw, so direct to the XQD cards) at 4k or UHD resolutions @ 60p?

AFAIK it doesn't have the capability, but wanted to check if anyone knows for sure before sending my response to a clients request!

Cheers folks,

jason

It is impossible to record ProRes with the R5 no matter what camera you are using. Also, an R5 records on AXS cards not XQD.
If you are really asking about the XDCA extension unit instead of the R5, it can't do ProRes in 4K. And in HD it can only do 30P. Talk the client out of ProRes anyway, XAVC is so much better.

Yeah, Doug is right. Internal ProRes is limited to 29.97 in HD. Only way to record 4K ProRes at 60p is to use the XDCA back and take the RAW feed into an Odyssey 07Q+ (or other external recorder) where you can record ProRes in a variety of flavours. I have to do it this way for a couple of clients who insist on ProRes. PITA.

Excellent stuff, thanks very much for the info/advice Doug & Liam. Of course you're right I was referring to the XDCA, and yes, I've already begun to talk the client out of P/R - fingers crossed!

Cheers gents,

jason

You can get 4k 60p out of hdmi but then its 8 bit I believe. Up to 30p the 4k out from hdmi to prores is the best IQ you get from the camera IMO, but not really worth it.

But doesn't the attachment of the XDCA make it possible to do prores directly to the xqd cards?

internal with XDCA only record 1080p PRORES.
HDMI can only do 2160p 23.97fps - anything above 24fps you need to buy XDCA module

There is a great graph at the beginning of this article that shows you the data rates of the various Sony codecs compared to ProRes. ProRes 4k 422 HQ is almost the same data rate as the 16-bit RAW recorded by the F5/55 and R5/7 combos.

Yeah, ProRes is very in-efficient compared to Sony's native codecs. I had the ProRes/DnX board installed on my F55 shortly after getting it and I've only used it a handful of times since.

They way I have heard it explained is that XAVC(whatever flavor) has a much higher DATA compression rate than ProRes, which leave the image intact, but makes smaller file sizes. The trade off is that it is much more processor intensive to decompress than ProRes, so the same machine will struggle more to read XAVC files in real time than ProRes.
