FS7: FS7 Microphone Mounting Options

Hi all, looking for some help working out a way to best mount my microphone (NTG3) on my FS7. I'm hoping to move it further back on the body, I don't need the front rod as I use a SmallHD 502 instead of the supplied Somy monitor. I'm considering buying the Shape top plate to give me more thread options and I'm guessing that would help with the mic positioning. Looking for something sturdy for my travels around the world with it.

Cheers,
Dean

Save yourself a lot of hassle and get a shorter mic that is designed as an on camera mic - basically the old mics that Sony used on their B-4 camcorders for years. Many positive reviews on DVXUser if you look and plenty good for on camera.
Could try the new sony ecm-xm1 only available at Amazon as far as I know, or the Audio Technica AT 875R which is tried and true. Don't let the low price scare you - these mics always get good reviews. I use the old B4 mic that is harder to find but is supposed to be identical to the AT 875.

Is it a lot of hassle? I see your point. Part of me doesn't trust the flimsy mic attachment to be honest, maybe should have mentioned that. The 875 is good but the NTG3 is great, I have both. I've actually said this about the mics in a previous post.. It's more directive, the sound is richer and there's less noise. I'm no sound techie, though I work with one at times and to us both there is a lot more precision in terms of what it picks up....

Well If you've got both then you know a lot more than me. How's handling noise and wind noise on the NTG3. Sometimes too much directionality is actually bad for an on camera mic. The stock mic holder is fine though.

I got the Sony ECM-673. Short, cheap and absolutely fine for sync sound and atmosphere

here's the smallrig stuff: plates, mic holder, handle, rod. I am still waiting for the EVF/monitor mount to arrive

I have the NTG3 and use the original holder from the fs7, a little tape around the microphone and it fits well. I also have the videomicpro attached on the hotshoe. Works fine. Both mics always with wind-protector. (Windy here in Holland).

If I may...that is quite a rig that in my world, wouldn't last the day before it got caught on something or I ripped it off.
Not sure what your issue is with the supplied mic holder. It seems flimsy but that's because it's a floating device designed to mitigate errant camera noise. Been using mine for a year with no issue. I use an original Sony mic which is quite good and the mic holder will take any mic in your kit. Might need some rubber tape for a tighter fit but that's easy.

How do you undo the screws to remove this?? i have undone the ones on the underside of the mic holder but i cant do the ones inside the latch of the cradle itself, do i need to heat the screws up first?

You have a small screw on the bottom of the handle. It's a tiny one, but when you remove it, the full bar goes away.
You can use any 15mm rod instead of the sony to get better and longer mounting point.

I'm not sure about mounting mic options but I recommend the SmallRig top plate as it is less than half the price and has more mounting options (and it is rock solid).

I'll second this suggestion. The Small Rig top plate allowed me to use one of Sony's earlier mic holders the CAC-11A. This mic holder dates back to the old 2/3" Sony DXC cameras, a 637 from memory. What I like about it is that it's spring loaded and can be folded back flush against the camera body for shipping, stowing in camera bag etc but can be extended out away from the camera when is use if so desired. In fact I leave it in the folded in position 95% of the time. It's mounted into two of the 1/4" 20 screw holes in the front right side of the Small Rig top plate. I've inserted two rubber grommets as shock absorbers and this allows a fair amount of vertical flexing should the mic get bumped. Like I said earlier if pushing around in tight situations where mics can get caught I leave it folded in. This whole arrangement sits much further back that the original rather flimsy mic holder. In the past I was always concious of the holder's fragility and the well forward position of the mic. Now it barely enters my mind... not much else does either sometimes!
