FS7: FS7 Luts

Anyone ever notice that the default Alexa 709 lut in premiere CC looks pretty good on FS7 slog3 footy? Anyone using something they think is spectacular?

In Premiere I start with the SLOG3 - SL - Profile, add 100 or 150 contrast, 125 saturation, 50 vibrance and 50 sharpening. I then make custom adjustments after my edit is complete (i.e. crush blacks, bring up whites etc.)

I find that the contrast adjustment has a much greater impact on bringing out natural saturation than simply crushing blacks/shadows and raising white/highlights.

I use a technical LUT to convert the colourspace and grade it as opposed to relying on a LUT as a magic bullet or as a grade.

With Slog3 and Arri LogC both mimicking a Cineon curve it is not surprising that the Arri REC709 works fine most of the time to give you your base.

Well, more that they both mimic the standard Cineon curve, as does RedLogfilm which is why Red have never released an official conversion LUT.

Yeah, I mean didnt Sony purposely copy almost exactly Log C for this very reason..?

The thing is a lut is input and output.. so I dont see the how the arri lut would make an arri look as the input (fd7) is different from Alexa.

A nice look maybe but SlogLC709 was the lut sony made to mimic some alexa characteristics..

Nothing to do with an 'Arri Look'.

It's just just that both log curves are based on Cineon and so a Cineon to REC709 LUT (which the Arri one basically is) should transform both flavours adequately, NOT match them to each other.

The S-Log3 and LogC are quite similar, but their color spaces, S-Gamut3.cine and AlexaWideGamut are a little different. If you want to be exact, build yourself a SL3/SG3c => LogC/AWG LUT first :)

I think its going off at a tangent .. no one is talking about matching Sony and Arri .. just that both Slog3 and Arri Log C are similar ,as both are based on the Kodak Cineon curve..mostly used for telecine I think in the 90,s.. and so of course logic would dictate that LUT,s made for LogC can also be used on slog3.. and can look good.. not sure many people would agree that Sony LC709 or more so LC709A (Arri) do actually look much like Arri 709 ! .. :)

I always try some Luts when editing in Resolve, most of the time it ends up with the standard sony slog3 lut or the Arri Lut.
