FS7: FS7 Lenses

Oh com'on Ben - I'm no Spielberg; all I know is that - just like my EX1 lens is specified by Sony themselves as:

f = 5.8 - 93 mm (equivalent to 31.4-503 mm on 35 mm lens) - see http://www.sony.co.uk/pro/product/b...dcam/pmw-300k2/specifications/#specifications - and I "saw the world" with FOV corresponding to 31.4mm focal length, my FS7 kit lens only lets me see the world with FOV corresponding to the focal lenghts starting with some 42, not 28mm. Also, after I put the 24-205 on a SpeedBooster which is "actively altering the focal length", I then need to put it on my FS7's E-mount, and the S35mm sensor will only let me "see the world" with the FOV corresponding to ca 25 and NOT ca 17 mm focal length. Just please confirm (or deny, but sticking to the stills FF35mm standard I understand best). TIA, and thanks

Piotr

The EX1 wasn't a Super35mm camera, or a Digital Cinema camera. I appreciate you aren't interested in this so I'll leave it be.

24-105 x 0.71 = the focal length of that lens when on a Speedbooster.

The really short version is it will look near enough like a 24-105 does on a full frame 35mm sensor DSLR but with a stop of extra light.

Bingo - your short version confirms what I wanted to make sure. Thank you for your time, and sorry for my "no-film-school" kind of questions:)

Piotr

PS.

1. I guess your "short answer" is perhaps the best one describing it to those many who - like me - do not see the world through the S35mm sensor
2. I'm aware EX1 was no S35 camera; just referenced it to make my point that the still FF35 has been a reference in the video lens rating for long...

Pah, it's not like Sony haven't been confusing or wrong in the past, too eh? :)

Glad I was some help, even if I was equally annoying.

Sorry for continuing being annoying, but have one more question regarding a zoom lens to better/more efficiently compliment my 28-135 G lens: what do you guys consider to be a good and not terribly expensive wide zoom (roughly in the range of 16-40mm) - either native E-mount, or to be used with the Speedbooster?

For instance: is Canon 16-35 (either F2.8 with Metabones Mark IV, or F4 with Speedbooster) a good choice? TIA

Piotr

Thanks; will the Sigma with EF-mount work with Metabones Mark IV on the FS7, or is some other combination preferable?

Sigma 18-35. Fabulous EQ and f1.8. its a prime killer.

100% this.

Get yourself a standard metabones or a Commlite adapter and be happy. Beautiful lens.

EDIT: It is a much better lens than the Canon 16-35 f2.8. I've not used the f4 version but I hear it is much improved.

What is the difference between the Sigma AF 18-35mm f/1.8 A DC HSM Canon, and Sigma AF 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM Lens Art Series for Canon?

Are both EF, or EF-S mount type?

So here we are after NAB and for many of us the situation is no better. The new Canon is not long enough and no new solution from Sony.

i suppose I will ago ahead with the Canon 24-105 F4 L with a SpeedBooster. Any advertisers on here have the white box version at a competitive price?

By the way, I am doing some test showing the 18-105's 4K distortion and my attempt(s) at correcting said distortion with BCC in Avid. Hope to post a link here in another thread.

I know we have had many of these threads but I almost always enjoy the discussion.

Y'all take care,
Robert

Definetly get the Sigma over the Canon 24-105. I love mine.

Very nice to work with, even for run and gun.

Image quality is so good, i rarely reach for my primes.

I am almost decided to go with the Sigma 18-35 F1.8 with Commlite, but have an impression reading I don't remember when that a new revised Commlite model is about to emerge. Is it true? Is so - what are the differences vs. the current model, and what exactly the new model name will be? This might sound like a silly question to you guys - but here in Poland it really can be difficult to learn this stuff from the staff in on-line stores, so please help me out avoid making mistake... Thanks in advance!

Piotr

PS. All I (or the seller) know about the Commlite I can get now is the full name being "Commlite Canon AF - Sony E version II"...So, is it the latest one?

Ach - also, what are the lens-camera communication limitations with the Sigma, Commlite and FS7? About the slow AF I know (and don't care too much), but iris control is going to work OK, right? And how about using the camera zoom rocker for servo zooming - will it work at all? How about IS: afaik, the Sigma has 3 stages of stabilization; do I switch between them with the lens or are they accessible from camera menu as well? And finally: any vignetting, or things like this?

It is worth considering that you really see the world with a 14 or a 20andSpeed booster - I always felt you did not see the world with an EX1

Also worth considering that 16-35 and stigma are big and not cheap especially with large adapters.

I would consider a 14 or 16 samyang or shuchlike.. might make a good combo with the 28-135?

Also I use the 10-24 sigma.. I bought it for £70 for a joke from cash converters.. and it is actually very OK

24 is long enough for a vox pop so it is a great crowd lens!

EDIT.. its actually a Tamron 10-24.. shows how much of a lens nerd I am (not)

Now you've made my head spinning, Sam... I'd like to have 2 complimentary zooms, and the 18-35 on cheap Commlite adapter looks like a great choice. So, before I pull the trigger: Could some actual lens nerd :) address my questions below? PLEASE :)

I dont know if you need a zoom.

Depends how you shoot, Ive never found a single zoom and usually ended up with a pair.. 18 prime and 35-70, for example.

A wide prime and a mid to tele zoom can work well..

Introduce the scene and do non synch wides with the wide prime and then move to mid-tele zoom for the interview.

Also I dont really see why you want to buy an EF lens with a costly and wobbly adapter (yes with a booster, but not without one)

You have many prime options..

Super cheap and small.. (actually can be too small and hard to focus without seeing your hand)
http://cvp.com/index.php?t=product/sony_sel16f28.ae

Manual feel and quite fast..
http://cvp.com/index.php?t=product/samyang_7545

Cheap and very wide.. it would even work with a speedbooster making it loony wide and quite fast
http://cvp.com/index.php?t=product/samyang_7562

Remember lenses with manual iris can work with cheap non electronic adapters.

(I mainly use with my Gh4 and FS7 and nikkors adapters for from SRB Griturn £30 each)

In terms of spec things like the canon 24-105 are pretty poor wide lenses in terms of distortion compared to prime lenses - my nikkor 24/2.8 is a way better 24mm lens.

I do like the Stigma 18-35, and Tonka 11-16 and my Tonka 10-24.. (I like the one with the big range 10-24) but my job probably needs zooms more often than yours?

It is also worth checkin g Abels FOV calculator, I look for lense combos in terms of FOV rather chip size/focal length.
