FS7: FS7 Lenses

Sam, you're forgetting about my weak and trembling hands after the neck spine surgery :( With this handicap, I guess I prefer to reframe with a wide fast zoom than by moving around my rig, especially on a heavy tripod. And when hand-held - I do need some image stabilization that those cheap primes do not have. So as sexy as this 16mm T2.2 Samyang looks (yes-I considered it also), the Sigma 18-35 F1.8 will be a better solution for me... All I need now is some answers to my detailed questions about using it with the Commlite adapter I posted above!

Fair ponts everyone needs the right kit for them.

You could buy it in NEX mount.. only a problem if you move to canon in the future ?

S

If something similar in performance, speed and range of some 16-30mm exists in E-mount, I'm all ears! Sure I'm a bit reluctant to purchase an adapter for just a single lens... But you know what? If I move to canon in the future, perhaps it'd be wise to fork for a much more expensive Speedbuster now, and be ready for F4.0-ish lenses which are much cheaper of course... And now, the Sigma would become even wider, and some F0.9 fast! BUT: would soch a combo work? Anyone, please?

remember 18mm is not that wide

according to abel http://www.abelcine.com/fov/

66 degrees
compared to
76 degrees for a 24 with a speedbooster?

or 75.6 for a 16mm

Im not sure of the FOV of EX1,

I guess I feel 75 degress is about the minimum for seeing the world.

S

Nice find... But it's 2x as expensive as the Sigma 18-35 F1.8 with Commlite, so with F4 it's not a real contender. For that price, I can have the Sigma/Commlite combo AND the Samyang E-mount 14mm T3.1 or 16mm T2.2...

Fair enough.. as long as it actually talks to the camera.

Mixing three brands is sketchy IMO - I d wait for user feedback.. but maybe Im just cynical.

EDIT.. its actually a Tamron 10-24.. shows how much of a lens nerd I am (not)

S

Tamron you mention... How aboout that one:

http://www.tamron.eu/lenses/sp-15-30mm-f28-di-vc-usd/

It's FF, so it could work with Speedbooster, giving F1.4 speed and covering 15-30 mm on the FS7! But it's not cheap, either - and a bit on a heavy side (especially with SpeedBooster).

Still waiting for opinions of those using Sigma F1.8 18-35 how it talks to the FS7 via the Commlite!

I think its smart not to buy these ebay-brands before confirmatiom. Trying to find if the new commlite smart adapter for nikon works on the fs7 for example. On their site it says: not supported on Sony camcorders, wonder if that includes the fs-series.

I am surprised nobody mentioned it earlier. I have the Tamron SP 15-30 in Nikon mount and use a Speedbooster Ultra to mate it with the FS7. The 15-30 is quite nice. See the reviews on YouTube and elsewhere. I tried a Tokina something (except for the SLP18105 I buy FF because I started there and still have FF cameras) that some folks said was soft at the edges and it was VERY soft at the edges wide open and stopping down did not help as much as one might hope. The Tamron was almost twice as much US$, so again it mostly get what you pay for.

The SP 15-30 is heavy and no screw on filter capability but there are workarounds for that. I actually bought a Matte Box to protect it, but probably should have one anyway. The image and build quality is so good they could charge more.

BTW, I doubt you will get IS with anything but an E or A mount lens as the camera and the lens need to properly communicate. Hope I'm wrong.

I hope you find something that works well for you,
Robert

I understand that this Tamron doesn't extend as you zoom in? If not, a mattebox is a possibility. As to your IS not working with the FS7 - perhaps it's the nikon mount/Speedbooster thing? So much doubts as to all those little details :( But thanks, anyway.

PS. Do you know if the Sigma 18-35 F1.8 does have stabilization working through Commlite adapter?

PS. The Speedbooster Ultra is said to support IS (http://www.metabones.com/products/details/MB_SPEF-E-BM2):

Man, I do shoot "some stuff". I just don't like to sell my 28-135 (perfect communication with camera, but not wide or fast enough with some locations) so I'm desperate to compliment it with another zoom, much wider and faster... Is that overthinking? And if you think it is, just please tell me if the Sigma 18-35 f1.8 will communicate with my FS7 via the smart Commlite - what's working, what's not :) Thanks,

Piotr

I've never used IS. Hate it. Wouldn't know.

But the lens worked okay on a Commlite for me.

Buy one used. if you don't like it you won't lose any money when you sell it.

Personally I no longer use any electronic lenses but that's a personal preference.

Personally I no longer use any electronic lenses but that's a personal preference.

Several years ago when I was fit and could trust my hands, I also was finding a pleasure and satisfaction wrangling lenses on my EX1/Letus Elite combo. Even not so long ago, I used them a lot on my FS100 (now sold). Those were several vintage Canon FD stills lenses, each bought off eBay for some Eur 25 and each with its own FD-E dumb mount... I really enjoyed those mechanical lenses a lot.

Unfortunately, turning 62 years of age now and after 2 unsuccessful neck spine surgeries, this is no longer a possibility. Carrying 2 zooms with me is the most I can manage. Besides, I did try those FD lenses on my FS7 and being some 40 years old, they are too soft for UHD (even though they were good enough for HD - both on Letus, and on FS100). So now I think you've got a picture why I'm so desperately after another zoom that would cover wider FOV/low light needs my kit 28-135 cannot...

Piotr

As I say it was a personal preference for me. Not saying one can't get good results with them. If shooting 1080p and if weight is such a concern I'd suggest just having the 18-35 and using the centre punch in on the FS7 to act as a doubler.

On a side note, a lot of FD lenses give astonishingly good results at UHD.

Seriously you're getting to the point of overthinking and overworrying.

Just go shoot some stuff.

I disagree. He has some special needs and wants to spend his money wisely. He has also endured some moderately snide remarks (not saying your remark was snide) gracefully.

Piotr, you sure 35mm on the long end is long enough for your intended use? Was it interviews?

Y'all have some fun Sun,
Robert

After a thread like this has gotten to 6 pages absolutely everyone from all walks of life and with lots of different levels of experience have all, myself included, given advice which contradicts what the next person is saying.

Which makes it hard to actually discern answers. Hence sometimes you're going to need to find out these answers for yourself about what works best for your particular needs and subjects.
