FS7: FS7 and 7Q+ for Raw 4K DCI. Do I have a workflow problem.

Must be some combination of CPU and RAM capacity. My GPU utilization hovers under 5% when playing XAVC. It takes nearly forever to render XAVC to any other format. I can render XDCam EX footage at ridiculous speeds (11X realtime) on this older machine, too. It can play h.264 easily, even the UHD demos I downloaded from Youtube. But for some reason, XAVC is a much more difficult flavor of h.264 to play.

Surely your not thinking XAVC I is comparable to XDCAM 8 bit 35 Mbps from an EX3.. ? or am I missing something...

That's a relative comparison. My current editing system is super-adequate for XDCam HD.. I normally edit 4 camera angle shoots of 100+ minute orchestra concerts with this system. But XAVC just won't go. There must be many flavors of h.264, because my system plays h.264 at UHD very nicely. But no go with XAVC.

Recap of the post from op

Hello

I just want to take a moment a thank everyone that helped me with this particular problem.

Here the summary of this post, as I understand it (hope I'm not making any mistake other than with my english) :
- The FS7/7Q Raw files needs nick's LUT to be properly ingested in Resolve. This seems odd at first, especially to see how the data are distributed. But it clearly works reestablish a S-Log3/S-Gamut3.Cine picture.
- Rerating the camera internally is useless while recording FS7/7Q RAW.
- In order to shoot overexposed, you should do it manually. 2 stops overexposed equalls 500ISO in the camera.
- Since recording one or two stops overexposed will appear overexposed on the 7Q screen, there is now LUTs for the FS7 to turn down the exposure from one and two stops, with the 7Q july firmware. This is very desirable.
- Rerating the camera internally for internal recording is useless if you don't apply a MLUT for the viewfinder (damn me).
- Seeing how the bandwith payload is distributed with sony RAW, (with very few data for the first stops), I'm wondering if interior shots at night are best captured with raw... Should I have chose uncompressed SDI or hdmi 4K DCI?

So for my particular shoot, I thing the exposure was OK. (We were anyway looking for a darkish feel). The mistake I made is that we did not record 1,5 stop over like I wished, because rerating the camera did no effect. Looking back at it, I would have gone 500ISO and two stops over.
I hope it can help anyone using the same workflow.

I quite liked the 7Q though, and appart from it getting quite hot, and occasionnal touchscreen freeze (that forced us to reboot it - about twice a day), the rest was all good. Easy to use, very good screen, very good zoom, gret peaking, great WFM with or without LUT etc...).

Now I need a proper grading screen.... That won't be easy as well.

Thank you all !

Two notes:

For interior night work or for any work, you are still better off shooting RAW. More data is, well, more data. The info coming out of the sensor and DSP is linear to start. That gets recorded in RAW but has a gamma applied in video for the camera's internal recording. But it had to start somewhere. There is no advantage in the internal recording.

If you ever find the touchscreen freezing or the response to touch poor, push the F1 Screen Lock button on the side of the device and then press it again. This recalibrates the touchscreen.

Somewhat OT here, just received the SSD handle kit to mount qualified 3rd party SSD's. Attached to my 2 Samsung 1TB drives, inserted drives into 7Q+, formatted and now have ability to record 51 minutes per drives @ 4096 24p.
