FS5: FS5 vs FS7

MM totally agree. I'm not supporting the conclusions put forward. I'm just sometimes amazed at how divergent peoples opinions can be on a similar topic. You have sleekmedia's viewpoint, you have DJ's viewpoint and then you have someone like Max Yuryev chiming in. All different viewpoints, all valid if it works for the proponents of those views. Personally I didn't like the grade or the colors in either video, especially #1 but there you go, who am I to judge something is not great if it suits another individual. I brew my tea the way I like it :)

Just bought a FS5, although I do not own a FS7 I use them constantly in the professional world and can say I know the camera well enough. The only deciding factor for me was SIZE. I don't think it is being stressed here that these two cameras are made for totally different uses.

FS7 if it's going on your shoulder, it's become a standard across many industries because it has a great feature set. Even in it's smallest form, the FS7 is bigger than it's relative the FS700. FS7 if you are building up with wireless video, audio, timecode, VTC plate.

I am absolutely thrilled with the FS5 and not because it is anything close to the FS7. It's because im traveling to several countries and want a camera that fits nicely in a side bag. I want to pull out a super 35mm slow motion camera on a crowded street and not call attention the way a FS7 would. The thing is a handy-cam if you take off the top handle. I LOVE IT, because I can take it almost anywhere and it doesn't take up space. It's has everything built in powered off 1 battery and is simple to turn on and start shooting.

The FS5 Frankenrigs are what make me start to scratch my head. Used FS5 is around 3.5k, FS7 M1 if you hunt 5k. You will easily spend 2k on toys to make FS5 into shoulder ready ENG setup. I get some people want a small camera they can build up, but even adding external recorder to the FS5 seems to me to go against it's greatest strength and real appeal: it's sexy pocket size.

That is how I look upon my FS5. Small and shouldn't be rigged with anything.

Where most people might look at an A7s2 or A7III as the b-cam, I look at the FS5 as just that, it can fit on a gimbal, built in ND's etc.
The MK I is pretty good value now and not far off something like the A73 so I think it' makes sense to have both for different setups or together.

The FS7 has so many advantages with built-in 10bit etc.
I'm not phased by size and weight. If you need to be nimble and light on a job then leave it in the bag but there will be interview gigs or certain jobs where the bigger form factor works. You really need both if a jobbing Dp.
