FS100 successor at Photokina?

Currently recovering from illness, I've been keeping my feverish brain entertained on the rumour mill and with speculation ;)

sonyalpharumours posted that a successor to the FS100 will be announced "possibly soon".

With Photokina coming up, if it's true, would it be possible Sony would announce it then? Do they have a history of announcing new products at Photokina?

And if they do, what do you think it'll be like?
There's a few things that seem certain, like XAVC codec, 4K (internal or external?), maybe it'll only do 60p to still give the FS700 (and it's eventual successor an upper hand). They'd be stupid not to have ND filters on it as that seemed to be one of the major complaints about the FS100. I'll bet it will have a zoom rocker too and come bundled with the 18-105 f4 PZ. SLog2 will probably be on there. But maybe still be 8bit?

My main interest in this thing is that I just sold my EA50 and by scrambling my resources and selling one of my kidneys I could just about afford to buy an Odyssey 7Q for my FS700. If this things comes out fairly soon, and is a step in the right direction (for my needs) then maybe I would be better off selling the FS700 as well and getting that one.

I sold my FS100 about three weeks before the prices dropped earlier this summer. I was lucky with that, but I was unlucky in that I bought a BMPCC six weeks before the prices dropped. Such is life.

I fear the next version of the FS100 might only have XAVC-s, but if it had XAVC, ND filters and a much better handheld form factor, like the C100, I would seriously consider it. However, I'm also interested in the update to the C100.

They should put a multifunction ring around the lens mount. Nice to have a big aperture ring there with native lenses instead of dealing with that horrible tiny wheel they love so much.

Ah, yes, it's the IBC and directly after is the Photokina. So should be a good time to announce and show something new. C'mon, Sony, do it! And please make the announcement as early as possible so I can make some decisions before a shoot around the 18th ;)

Just a thought, no matter what comes out (besides a fs700 replacement) probably won't have the ability to record HFR 200/240, 4k 120 fps RAW, prores 4k etc at 10/12 bit. Of course you need the odyssey 7q but anything remotely close to those specs is more likely to be an f5 replacemnet . So IMHO the fs700 is a mainstay, good low light, HFR, great external recorder (odyssey). Plus anything announced wont come out till spring or next fall anyway.

For my part, I have hardly used the high frame rates of the FS700, and not so interested in 4K or raw at this point. So I would pretty much get the 7Q to get a better picture and get rid of the ugly edge contrast thing.
But if a new cam did 60p had better codec and no edge problems I'd rather have that and no external recorder to deal with.
The 7Q is a bit overkill for my needs and if I even manage to buy it, I won't be able to afford the actual FS700 codec license until I don't know when...

I think that both the FS700 and EA50 were announced in august and started shipping in Late September/October when they were released... So not so long. The A7S also wasn't that long from announcement to release...

I agree. What your needs are sounds like its around the corner. Interesting to see a 2nd generation BM or the next GH4 or A99. :) shouldn't be too long

Give it a sensor with similar capabilities to the A7s, and it will be a winner. Priced against Cinema EOS with internal 4K? Out of the park.

The trouble is that an upgrade is basically a 700 or f5 specs in a more plasticky box

(f5 engine in a FS100 box would be a great cam as it is so portable)

Both of those would 'kill' a more expensive camera

So I guess the upgrade (if there is one) will be flawed/crippled/hobbled in some manner.

FS200 - 4k XAVCs, no SDI, no raw, 4k, 60p?

Such a camera used to deliver 1080 may be worse than the FS100 due to downscaling issues?

As I still use my FS100 quite often (it's my only camera), I'm still happy with it so far.
Yes, it's only 8bit and the highlight rolloff is bad. You need to dial in you're picture
according to your lightning situations. But it still delivers a very nice picture, if you're
capable of squeezing out the max.

A successor would be nice if:
- 10bit codec
- cinegammas (better highlight rolloff)
- NDs (of course)

Honestly, with the F5 and the FS700 I can't see any space left for a new pro camera
in between. With 10bit and cinegammas and maybe 4k it would just crash the FS70
sales and steal some of the F5 sales...

well, I could see it being better than the FS700 in many ways as long as some tricks (raw, high frame rates?) remain in the favour of the FS700. But I'm sure there's a successor for the FS700 coming out eventually as well. So if for some months the smaller model beats the bigger maybe that is something Sony don't mind.
Or maybe it's one model meant to replace both the FS100 and FS700? (Not so likely though)

But let's say we have
Improved body (quality & maybe ergonomics)
ND filters
XAVC up to 60p
4K (internal or external)
Improved sensor & processor
Zoom rocker

That would already be a major upgrade without really competing so much with the higher end cameras.
And they should finally give up on that EMU128 or what it was called. Maybe in favour of 2 SD slots?

I can't help but be interested in this new model, but really, what will it do that my A7s can't do? Will it be worth the expense just to add internal 4k and nd?

a7s with XAVC (non-S) and internal 4K? I'm in!

But reading this thread, I get much more of a "what will they give us" feeling than "what can they do". Which is troubling, because the lineup is already so packed... I can't see them selling many FS100 bodies right now, but it's not easy to improve it significantly without threatening the FS700 (at least on paper). Marketing will find a way, probably. But it's not Marketing I want to speak with...

according to the article it will be S35 not full frame like the A7s though... But if it has latest sensor with slightly better dynamic range and low light than the FS700, that's enough for me...

well, the FS700 is probably due for a replacement soon too, so if it threatens the FS700 for a couple of months it's probably not a big deal for Sony. And still maybe the raw and slow motion with a 7Q will give the FS700 an edge to the people who need that.

The F5/55 are XAVC. Without a doubt this new camcorder will be xavc-s. More then likely similar codec as the AX1. 4:2:0 in 4k and maybe at best 8-bit 4:2:2 in 1080. The new FS700 can be similar like the upcoming pxw-70 with 10-bit longop 4:2:2 and the cams still fit in the line. That being said im excited to see what Sony releases. I've experienced the benefits of 4k on a 1080 timeline and if all looks good picking one up especially if there's nd-filters and the LCD is off the top of the body.
