FS100 Reflection

I'm not sure, but I think I may be getting some type of sensor reflection with my ND filter. Has anyone else had this and is there anything you can do about it?

I used an old LCW Fader ND on a 35mm Rokinon 1.4 lens. Haven't seen it before, but I've only been using the FS100 for a few weeks.

It's definitely not the mount adapter because there was no reflection without the fader when I spiked the shutter.

I believe that I have read some posts some where about reflections when shooting with the FS100, but I don't remember where they are. I am actually surprised with the very short flange to focal plane distance of the E mount system that there aren't more problems with sensor reflections with the cameras.

It seems that heavy NDs can cause issues and may need to be protected from light sources outside of the image

Try a matte box? or at least some experimentation with black card and see what protecing the filter from light does

The FS is the first camera I have owned where I have begun to perceive a need for a matte box - this is due to the need often for a heavy amount of ND to be applied

Good luck

No one has had a reflection like this??

It was a lot of talk about this problem somewhere on inet.. all this happend because FS-100 have a sensor with very saturated GREEN surface, and if YOUR FILTER, do not have good anty-reflection coating on the back side - you will get something like "green restangular" fantom on your footage ....

That is 100% correct. You could have not described it any better. It's a small, green rectangular ghostly-like overlay...I'm going to post a picture tomorrow.

Just the nature of the camera, it'd show up on any body if the circumstances are right.

This happened on a shoot I was 1st on. Drove me crazy cause I couldn't fix it. We also had the Fader ND on. Just ended up making sure we didn't frame anything bright enough to cause the reflection.

For whomever asked, I can confirm that have seen sensor reflections with the FS100, Nikon lenses, and a 77mm Heliopan variable ND filter when used in combination.

I just wanted to follow up and post a link to the reflection I'm getting. Sorry for the shake. I just wanted to show a quick shot out the window to show when the reflection is not present and then when it is in different lighting. You can see it on the plant base and the brown box.

That reflection is probably from the ND filter, not the sensor. I get the same problem with my ND filter as well (or any glass in front of the lens actually). The other problem, the green box, that happens with regards to the back of the lens and the reflection of the sensor on that.

I too just work around them when I see them. I've ALWAYS had the problem with anything on the lens, but the green box is new for me. The AF100, which did get some reflection VERY rarely, didn't do it as often as the FS100. As said, be careful for strong light sources in front.

I get it big time when I have my Sigma 50mm f1.4 DG HSM on. It happens whether or not I have the viarable ND, UV filter, or butt naked (the lens, not me). I haven't seen it on the stock lens, or the 16mm pancake or my Nikon 135mm f2.8.
I've never seen this kind of thing before - I've previously owned the 7D and XHA1.

I've seen this when using cheap filters that don't have good quality anti-reflective coatings. This looks a lot like that to me and NOT a lens-to-chip reflection. It's not all that common to find a lens with a mirror-flat rear element.

You know in that vimeo vid example i agree 100% with you. It doesn't look like its a reflection from the chip at all. Its a reflection off whatever is in front of the lens. The reflection image is of the street below but he's overexposed so its not whats hitting the chip but its the sun lit city reflected on the LCW fader thats causing it.

I have not seen this on my FS-100 at all. I use mostly 4x4 filters, but when I'm run and gun with a zoom and a circular pol it has not been an issue either. Ditto for sensor reflection.

The green reflection is dependent on the back of your lenses. Good lenses with anti-reflective coating on the back are going to be less likely. As mentioned, the Sigmas do it. Whatever is on that sensor, it's HIGHLY reflective. My Sigma's never did that on the 7D.

As for the filters on the front, I used a $350 polarizer and a $12 polarizer to test. The $350 had NO reflections. The $12 was like the example video. The quality of the glass and coating makes a HUGE difference.

It has nothing to do with being overexposed/under. I can confirm it's just the LCW. I don't recommend it.

Heliopan, here I come!
