Fs100 & pix 220/240

Has anyone tried using the PIX220/240 on the FS100?

Specifically to be able to capture 1080 60p? Is it possible?

I've been searching the web all day and can't seem to find a definitive answer.

Does any external recorder currently have the capability of recording the 1080 60p coming off the FS100?

Honestly, beyond any comparison of image quality. With the added ease and speed of shooting to ProRes/DNxHD and being able to drop your footage on a timeline without having to transcode or render as you cut, you'll make back the cost of a recorder in saved time, in no time at all.

It's the post workflow of shooting to ProRes on the Atomos recorders that completely convinced me on the recorder option.

Quote from Tim Nitsch: ("I read that but I also saw this that seems to say the opposite.

The difference though noticeable, doesn't seem big enough to warrant spending a grand or two on a recorder.

So who is right?")

Sorry Tim I edited my post because I quoted the wrong post now rectified.

Thanks for posting that link. It's a well done test that makes the case for an external recorder.

Yeah thats true, I forgot about that, The time you would save probably would make it worth it.

Its the only recorder that reads the hdmi (properly)
it will trigger recording from camera
3:2 pulldown
SD preamps
recording will roll over SSD/CF

I agree the Pix got all the bases covered. The ninja does not do pulldown. I went with a used nano flash for its smaller size, low weight, low power consumption, so I can power the Fs100 and the nano flash with one np-f swit camera battery, has pulldown, and now having gone back to Final Cut Pro X the files form the nano flash are transcoded in the background to prores so theres no transcoding wait time loss. Camera trigger recording apparently coming soon with firmware update.

I use the pix 220 on a daily basis for an internet show where quick turn around is critical. Being able to shoot directly to ProRes 422 @ 720 24p makes all the difference to our workflow. I really hope they address some issues with a firmware update such as record triggering from camera and monitor calibration. For now i have to trigger it from a lanc controller when I shoot handheld. In my hand held rig I roll the Fs100 with my right hand via lanc and the Pix 220 with my left hand via a seperate lanc remote. It works ok but I dont have a tally light to confirm Im rolling. I have to glance back at the Pix just to make sure.

I looked at all of the recorders on the market and came to the conclusion that the Pix 220 is definately the best match for the Fs100 under 2000. One of the careats however is that although it can record 720 24p it cannot output it to a monitor so if you intend to loop though the Pix to a evf or client monitor you will need a workaround. In my case I run hdmi first to my Zacuto evf and pass through to the Pix.

All in all though Im quite happy with it.

What about like a Y-adapter? (if they make them) You would go from a single Lanc controller to the Y-Adapter then out to the PIX and the FS100?

I definately thought of a y cable but could not find one available. The guys at B&H didnt think one existed or would work. Or maybe they were just trying to get me to buy the 2nd lanc controller. It would be great to see if it would work. I do have my doubts though. I may have to make one myself and experiment.

We currently support reading HDMI timecode from the FS100 and other Sony cameras in PIX240, not 220. This can be used to record trigger the 240 from camera timecode when the camera is set to Rec Run timecode mode.
The Sony HDMI protocol does not currently support triggering from rec start/stop flags.

The PIX HDMI output is HDMI version 1.3 - this protocol does not support 720p24. The PIX HDMI input is HDMI version 1.4 which does support 720p24.
It is worth checking with your monitor's manufacturer whether they support reading 720p24 over HDMI.
The PIX240 SDI out DOES support 720p24.

Hi Paul,

I'd love to confirm if the PIX 240 can receive an HDMI input and loop it out through SDI to feed a monitor (either on its own or along with a concurrent HDMI out). The feature list seems to indicate it does. If so, how much delay is there between input and output signals?

Thanks!

i'm about to pull the trigger on one of these. just to confirm, does the 220 loop through 1080p/24? and if it's not reading TC, does it still remove pulldown? lastly, is there a way to record slow motion? does hdmi and or the 220 support 1080/60p?

The PIX will loop through whatever signal it is fed.

Pull down removal is based on the PIX recognizing the proper cadence of the 24p frames over 60i. There is a good video on this at:

The PIX can not record slow motion in this firmware.

The PIX does not support 1080/60p only 1080/30p in this firmware.

thanks for the link. do you have first hand knowledge that the fs100's flagged frames/cadence plays nice with the pix220? this is the make or break issue for me before purchasing.

thanks.

I have never tested it specifically, but I see no reason why it would not work.

Coffey Sound had a 220 in their display case when I was there last week. Your profile says you are in Burbank, so it would be a short drive down to check one out.

Abel Cine and Location Sound also have demo 240s on display as well.

I can tell you that in my experience the 220 plays just fine with the fs100 60i output. It performs the 3:2 pulldown on the fly and even warns you if you select a frame rate that might result in judder or other issues.
