Is it possible to reduce the background noise in this clip?

Dropping some of the constant ambient noise a bit isn't too challenging, but the plane's sound runs right through the same frequency range as the dialog and the sound varies as well. Basically meaning that it would be difficult to remove the plane, and if you did the voices would end up being distorted.

Living with it or ADR would be my 2 suggestions, though I know that's not what you want to hear.

I'm going to assume that this clip is a part of a longer scene. I have run into this exact problem, and if the dialog is understandable simply I added airplane/jet/whatever to the preceding and subsequent clips for the sake of continuity.

I'd agree with Gohanto, with STP it should be easy sample the ambient noise and lower it but I think you're in trouble concerning the plane.

Pretty much all of the above. You can get rid of some of the freeway/ jet? by whacking out some of the low end, but the prop-plane is not going anywhere. Uncle Bob suggests what I would probably do , after cleaning out some of the BG. STP, the version you have, is not going to be much use to you. It will let you whack around a bit but it's a two track editor so, not in context. I would probably opt to use the filters in FCP instead. I'm assuming you don't have any sound friends or a budget that would let you hand this off to someone who actually does sound, because that's your best bet.

I'd prescribe iZotope RX.
Download a demo and give it a try.

It's probably the best bet but it's still a long shot. The problem is that it's an evolving sound so the only way in RX would be to use the spectral repair and that would be a very hard job for someone with experience and just hugely difficult. And I may be stretching here but he hasn't even upgraded his editing app so I'm thinking he's probably not going to be all over dropping $350 - $1,200 on a noise reduction app.

I use RX all the time and it's what I would use to reduce the BG, but then I would add a prop-plane to match the one that's there to smooth the transitions. If for story reasons you CAN'T have a plane in the BG I would go for ADR, and I HATE ADR. I just think that if you could totally remove the plane your track would be so damaged that you would go back. I would probably give it a shot if I were doing the sound but I would also expect that I was wasting my time.

yea i handed this off to a sound guy i know and he just sent it back and it sounds like crap. i hate ADR, especially on an indie level, but after i screen this scene to the crew and some other people if the consensus is that we need to do something about it then i may have to go that route. the only good thing i guess is that there is no airplane in the previous clip, you don't really hear anything until this last pass of the scene

future reference.
In these types of situations try to get wild lines on set.
Just mighta saved your butt.

Do you have any other takes you can try to pull from?

Well that's kind of what people have been saying, there is SO much noise and a prop plane on top that to remove it will destroy the track. If you reduce it you have to add background back in, you can't leave a heavily processed clip hanging out bare. It might not sound so crap like if you put a little BG on it. Still I don't know why you wouldn't just lower the noise a bit and add plane on both ends to make it fit in. There is almost no place in the US, europe, Canada etc that you don't get the random small plane go by, and it's a prop plane so you have a pretty large date window also, it's not like your doing a medieval drama.
