FS100 owners - are you going to switch to the FS700?

We all know the specs on the new 700. It seems like it will be priced between $8-10,000.
The question is - are those of us who now own the 100 going to make the big switch?

In my case, as sweet as the 700 appears to be, I won't make the jump anytime soon. I am budgeted for an FS100, and that's where I will stay - for now.
Ask me again in 6 months.
Actually, I'm more inclined to switch to the JVC HMQ10, because it's closer in price, and it can do 4K now, dammit! (Not that I need 4K.)

yes i will switch, much sooner rather than later if they offer an upgrade path

i think it will be a fairly extensive upgrade over the fs-100

you've got

4k sensor scaled to 1080p - that should be much sharper than what we currently have

absolutely amazing slow motion options

built in nd filters (this is huge for me)

option of upgrading to 4k

these make it a no brainer for me

I just wish they would have announced it one week sooner lol

Wannabe, is it possible you have a return policy on your cam? Some places offer a full refund, if done in time.

I likely will, especially if they offer some sort of upgrade path. But I will be waiting until the 4k recorder specs and price are revealed.

Looks like a great camera though, and I can at least say that my FS-100 pretty much paid for itself at this point anyway.

I'll wait and see what the images from the camera look like.

I don't need 4k, I rarely if ever need anything above 60fps. My mattebox and filters are working just fine. If there's a significant jump in image quality, then I'll consider it =)

After reading everything I can find on the FS700, I can say that I will be buying one by years end. Currently I've got the FS100, and it's doing fine for right now. However, I can see the benefits that the FS700 offers. And since all the extras I've got for the 100 should work for the 700, it makes sense.

The one thing that the 700 has going for it right now that would make me buy it instantly, if I had/have the cash when it ships, is the built in ND filters. Everything else is fluff IMO.

The fact that FS700 has both HDMI and SDI outputs makes management of external monitors and recorders a lot easier. The NDs and more robust build are welcome, as are any improvements in image quality (at 1080). Otherwise I have no need for 4k at this time, and won't be switching from my FS100 right away. I'll be paying attention to various roadmaps at NAB.

And when you buy a camera at launch you can often miss mid-life-cycle bundles and price drops (happened to the AF-100, FS-100, F3 SLog.)

Speaking of the F3, I wonder what the FS700's "big brother" looks like...

I was about to throw my cash down on either an F3 or an EX3, this has come right out of left field and will probably be bought, considering all my gear was bought to work with the FS100, it fits perfectly. The slo-mo options intrigue me, but the 4k sensor and the possibility of a higher DR impress me more, either way, I am excited.

I just bought an FS100 in February. I will not say that I won't buy an FS700 but, I bought the FS100 because it was the best camera for my budget, for my needs and those of the clients who hire me to shoot. I was looking for the "dslr look" with all of the pluses of xlr input, monitoring etc. My experience with the GH13 as my B camera certainly helped me move in this direction after shooting with a 35mm lens adapter on the front of my HMC150 (what a monster)I still feel that the FS100 is the right camera for me. I feel that the move by Sony is great for all of us who have invested in the FS100 because it shows that the company is committed to "line" and that includes lenses and firmware etc. We could all spend lots of time chasing the next camera and the past few months prove it, with the C300 and now the FS700 and the JVC 4k and who knows what is next with NAB around the corner.
Will I buy an FS700? Maybe, but I will work the FS100 I own and see how it works for my clients, I know that in the next six months I will buy another camera that is better suited to run and gun work with a servo zoom lens. I like the FS100 but recently worked with a couple of clients who come from a news background and their style is better served with an ENG style camera like the EX3 or....______________________(insert the next rave here)

definitely sticking with my fs100. not only do i not have the budget for a 8k+ body but the only advantage i really see are the ND filters. my fs100 creates an amazing image and i think that spending more money on a body isn't right for me.

bit off topic, but what adapter are you using with the tokina Evan?

Sticking.

OK, what he said. 55 hundred or so is my budget for the camera body. Especially when…...

….I'm really harping on what Kholi said a few days ago. (Something along the lines of the production cycle has gone from 3-4 years to 1.5, if that) If the companies keep popping cameras out at this rapid pace, WTF, it's making more sense to rent than buy.

For me, I could see having a fairly inexpensive camera in possession for quickie shoots, and rent something nice for a high paying gig.

Totally off topic, but if anyone has a suggestion for an affordable rail system that works with a the FS100, please PM me. ( for example, I have a Canon 24-70, but I want to give it some support.) I see great pics, but not sure what is being used.

I hope I didn't make anyone feel bad about their purchase, that wasn't the intent at all. I've actually begun to warm up to the FS100 footage I'm seeing, I think the FS700 would be a camera I'd use but I don't know if I could go out and spend 9~10K on a camera now... even figuring that I could probably rent it out enough in a year to pay it off.

I just... don't even want to go through that trouble. Not when I have a DSLR that's making incredicraze images and cost next to nothing to get started on. Indeed, renting for better jobs is the idea. That does mean you're billing more to people for the rental, and hopefully getting a good connection on the gear to balance out your own wage.

What's more important to own now, more than ever, is support gear: a solid set of sticks that will work with any camera, a solid three to four lens set, maybe a mattebox if you roll like that, and an external recorder to break away from whatever internal codec you don't like. The NanoFlash just got cheaper.

But the camera body... man... I want, but parting with money is a hard thing to justify these days just going to Wendy's...

Not switching current work doesn't allow the extra expense.
Shame I like the built in ND's and higher possible resolution but it's
not exactly what clients are asking for. I still haven't been asked
what's up with this resolution...it's horrible! Even when shooting on DSLR's
and looking back at the resolution power of a 5D I cringe...Also super
slow motion is nice but again current work I do doesn't demand more than
60p. The ability is nice though, quite nice.

So I have more than I need and I am content with a Fader ND
and paying the bills.

Hopefully I get some Sony love in the firmware update.

Why it have to be SWITCH ?? :) I can just add FS-700, when I will need it: Now I teach my assistant boy to shoot, so maybe we can just use TWO Sony cameras in the future, instead FS-100 and 5D2, as we do now... :)

I may be selling my FS100, not because of the FS 700 but because I have a Scarlet and having the two seems redundant in some ways (whereas I really need a small guerilla form factor like the 5D MK3).

The FS 700 also bothers me in some ways - though I have to wait until they release all the info about the 3G SDI. What do they mean by 4K raw? An 8 bit raw codec? What good would that be? Also, while it's perfectly acceptable to me to have the NEX lens mount on a under $5K camera, I'm kind of leery with having a $10K camera with a NEX mount. I don't like adapters on really expensive cameras. Either it's PL or EOS built in like the C300 and Scarlet.

If anyone is interested in a hardly used (only for testing) FS100 for $4200, PM me. Yeah, I'm an idiot who buys cameras and is too busy on a post day job to shoot. I guess it was like a brand new car. You drive it off the lot and it loses a lot of value. I will put on Ebay when I have more time.
