fs100 new e-mount lenses? suggestions, ideas, thoughts, rambling...

When will there be fast lenses made for this camera? I can't believe Sony is putting out the same zoom lens but with a different color lens body...

I enjoy putting canon ef, fd and the emount lens baby that takes nikon lenses... But c'monnnnn, this thing is suppose to be a good camera for weddings, lately i've been thinking how great it would be for a 2.8 lens that does auto focus (when bride is walking down the aisle toward the groom at the front of the church (and where I would stand)... And maybe a 30 1.4.. and 50 1.2...

how about make a servo lens that is a f2. 11mm-200mm? Thanks.. that would most likely solve it, even for the fs700, since that camera kinda solves it in itself with the nds.... k done babbling.

A F2. 11-200mm????? Well we all know thats never gonna happen but I think Sony could do well (very well actually) with a nice 2.8 18-55MM e mount with oss and af.
(I would imagine that would sell of the hook, and take away a few sales from the canon or nikon line in that range)

There is a G level standard zoom on their lens roadmap. And soon there is a smaller pancake zoom (not very useful for us though). With the rocker switch on the FS700 there must also be some additional zoom plans as well. As to when... Who knows...

cheers

Yeah, really need some more E mount lenses. A 18-55 2.8 of high quality is all i want. You could get the LA-EA2 adapter that allows you to use AF on Sony A mount lenses (sigma too, and they have OS). Except it's limited to 3.5.

Well when I used my z7u, It looked about 24mm to me or wider when I was completely zoomed out and around 200mm or more when zoomed in.. and the z7u's lens has a F stop that goes from 1.6 wide to f2 when zoomed in. If they could do it for the Z7U (zeiss lens) then Sony should be able to do the same for a camera thats for the fs100 and fs700 with the same F-stops. I would buy a 1 lens that did just about everything for $2500.

I feel like the lenses they are making is not directed towards film makers who want the option of shallow depth of field. And the fs100 is amazing, and the fs700 will be too... so I don't understand the logic. Also the design of the lenses can be better too, why is the focus rings flush with the lens body?

The Z7U has a 1/3" sensor. It's much cheaper to manufacture a lens that only has to cover a small image circle like that than one that needs to cover a Super35 sensor (almost five times the diameter of 1/3"), especially at that speed. The new Zeiss Leightweight Zoom, for instance, covers Super35, ranges from 15.5mm to 45mm at T2.9, is directed towards filmmakers, and costs $29,000.

Photo lenses, especially zooms, make sacrifices (mechanical build, speed, focus breathing, etc) to be as cheap as they are, and also benefit from far higher sales volume than cine lenses, which are a more niche market.

The versatility and ergonomics of lenses on smaller sensors is a reason why 1/3 - 2/3" ENG-style cameras aren't going anywhere, even as Cine-style cameras become more common. The trade-off is deep depth of field, but even that's a benefit in many situations those cameras are designed for.

You are mis understanding physics - you Z7 has a 1/3 inch sensor - so the lens needs to cast an image circle of 1/3 of an inch , the FS100 sensor is maybe 10X larger, needing an image circle 10X larger, making the lens.. 10X larger

Have a look at your z7 lens, maybe 77mm front, to get the same on an S35 chip you would need 10X the cross sectional area of the front element, probably about 300mm diamter front element mybe more

The lens would be ths size of a dustbin, and cost more than your house

Check the Arri 16-110 master zoom, $58k and 29LB - half the spec of what you want!

Edit: Max - did we say the same thing at the same time? :)

I realize the fs100 has a 35mm sensor compared to the z7s small 1/3 inch sensor. In this market, who cares about breathing compared to Sony bringing out lenses that do no justice in this market for budget film makers. And who cares about e-mount lenses that are 18-55 or 55-200 with no option of having a lower aperture. That does nothing for the budget film maker.. when I say budget film maker I mean someone like me at the moment, I am filming with a fs100, also own a z7u and I use various ef canon and fd lenses, I have the essentials to give a kick ass video but its so many nick nacks to make things work... Its 2012 is all I am saying, there should be the technology to do this kind of stuff, no matter what physics may have to say regarding it. The thing I wonder about is if Sony can make lenses that no prosumer or professional will buy for cameras that are really good (which I feel is insulting to the camera), it is possible to make a lens that fits on the fs100 thats a servo auto/manual lens that has the potential to have low aperatures for a professional, prosumer and consumer who has the money to blow.

I just took a pic now of a Canon fd 20mm and a Sony z7u stock zeiss lens. Look at the size of the lens. Obviously the mechanics and however the z7's lens are completely different but I don't see the point of physics playing a role (when I love to say it) but the imagination is way more powerful than anything in physics.

Look at the pics, there a way to do this with a lens that cost under $4000. The fs700, would then be the ideal camera for cinematic events.

The only reason I think weddings, events and really any project could benefit from this is the lack of nick nacs the film maker will have to carry around all day, switching this and that.

There is a reason why the guys that took science in school design lenses ... not the guys that took theatre!

Remember that 2.8 and that sensor size gives you a lot more photons (light sensitivty) and shallower DOF than your Z7

Even the kit lens at 18-200 6.3 has far less DOF than your Z7 lens and 1/3 chip

Sony have a lens for the F3 its 18-270 and $7g - still 6.3

I agree with your desires and what you want - I hate changing lenses, hate faffing about, and hate the quality of the kit lens (its worth every penny of the $300 it costs)

I would love to see a decent zoom in the $4k area, my guess is that it would be a 18-70 2.8-4 or maybe 18-100 2.8 to 4

Fuiji have a new lens - absoluterly perfect in size, range and all the rest 19-90 - $38k

Lose a stop and some build quality it coud probably be around $4k, I guess

The z7u lens, is a F1.6 to F2. I imagine they could make the same kind of lens, maybe a f2 to f2.8 in an build quality similar to the z7u lens for under $4k. Everyones use to breathing from dslr lenses, and if you are fine by that then you may be fine by the build quality of the sony e-mount lenses that are $300-800 in price.. But you're right, its just a desire for something better eventually.

At 3.5 or 4 you still have DOF field that is tiny (compared to a 1/3) and lowlight performance that would eat it too - you are comparing apples with conkers

Really would you even want a 2

(you probably would.. and so would I but ultimately its virtually impossible to hold focus at 2 - never at an event)

Well I use a 30mm sometimes at 1.4 and a canon 50 at 1.4 at times so I imagined I'd use it as low as possible at times.

If you want a camera that zooms buy one that zooms. You bought an fs100, a camera that doesn't have servo zoom, that has a HUGE sensor and using still lenses (minus a few e mount lenses that are for video). Its a very new market. Ive seen people put servo lenses on an af100, maybe you should just switch to that, or just buy an ex1/3. either way, stop complaining.

Does zooming in shot even work with 25p - not really - you need 50i blurro vision

I think there does need to be a campaign for a decent zoom lens, but a realistic one..

Well put.

I'd settle for a constant 3.5 or 4 parfocal manual 28-135 or there abouts.

For the target market who are drawn towards a large sensor camera a good quality manual zoom with IS would be more pleasing than a fast lensed motor zoom with spongy focus. Which is what Sony will make.

I haven't used the Alpha Zeiss lenses to know if they have better manual controls but they're a bit too heavy for me (and expensive).

The Ex1/3 cameras surely cater for the pointing at bright lights/zooming while shooting fraternity?

I own both a z7u and fs100. Im talking about my ideas to see if anyone else thinks its a good idea, I believe its possible to create a lens that does this.. Check out the fs700 with the zoom rocker, its already in the works but will it be good?

Someone mentioned it earlier in the thread, but check out the Sony zoom lens they make for the F3 (also Super35 sensor). It's probably the closest thing on the market to what you're looking for, and will give you an idea of what's possible right now and what that would cost. As you say, since the FS700 also has a zoom rocker, it's very likely they'll have something akin to this for that camera down the road as well, maybe even just a version of this with an E mount.
