FS100 firmware release date

After release, I will dig out a frame grab at +30dB.

And this is what kills me, we didn't even use noise reduction on it. Since we were degrading the shots anyways, it didn't matter, but coming from a 7D before, it was cleaner than ISO2000 to me.

Is it just me ( and my eyes getting old) or is there a sweet spot, where you get less noise with higher ISO?
As far as I know the codec (and who knows what VooDoo Sony employs elsewhere) adjusts to exposure and ISO setting.

The manual says that the settings return to default, when power is turned off. I so often turn the camera on and off, when doing documentary stuff, I would never have the time to black balance every time.

Is this really necessary?

Edit: Already answered. Changing temperatures makes sense. Maybe when it´s really hot it may help reducing noise I guess.

It's crazy. I sat and played with my 7D and the FS100 at higher ISOs and was just SHOCKED at how much nicer the FS100 looked. And here is the thing, I didn't see the tell-tale signs of noise reduction I'm used to seeing, so it must even be lower noise just to begin with. Or, Sony has just come up with some AWESOME noise reduction algorithms.

@ FelizGER - explain what?

Black balance?

You have to black balance every time you change lenses or your black levels will be off. When you look at the scopes, you want your colours to fall between 0-100 IRE. If you don't black balance you might start at 10 instead or 0 and although you can colour correct, you have already crushed your black levels on the recording, which isn't desirable.

Isn't that what the black level in the PP is for? adjusting that between -15 and 15 brings down what is considered black. Not sure why a lens change would mean adjusting the actual black balance. Would love to understand more?

cheers
Paul

ok - did some tests with charts and it turns out the black balance difference isn't as dramatic as I thought it was lens to lens. Maybe 1 IRE... but definitely not 10. It must have been a bad white balance that was getting my blacks all muddied and forcing me to colour correct in post, which I'm pretty addicted to on Premiere Pro CS5.5 with a CUDA card because it is real time and floating 32bit colour processing.

I haven't black balanced with this camera as often as with others.
With the AF100 if I was upping the ISO I was black balancing
as it was important to do so with that camera.

That camera is (in my opinion!) bad about noise, and most profiles
just turn down sharpening to nothing to compensate. Don't
have to do that with this camera my general -3/-4 sharpening
still stands when hitting high gain levels. Without creating
sharp digital noise, which is the key.

Before a shoot I usually do a black balance and truthfully
I could be accused of forgetting a time or two. Still really
hasn't affected the end result in a way that it would with
other cameras. If at all.

Ahhh! Okay, think I've heard it with different names. The AF100 has this ability I remember, just never shot any monitors with it.

As promised, we did release the thing we shot today. Before you look at the link, I want to say, this wasn't a test of exactly what the FS100 could do. Well, maybe from me, but the editor who shot hand-held for most of the shots with me shooting on a 7D (letting him get familiar with my FS100) and cut both together. Because the 7D is so much softer, in this case, he went a little crazy with getting that bourne identity look on some cuts with some better action in between.

The wide shot from below the walkway is the 7D which is why it's even more soft. A lot of the scenes were desaturated by everything but red, as you'll see. What I like most is that hand held, I don't see any rolling shutter popping out at me.

Our other project, Mario Warfare, is still in production and does show more of what the camera can do. We wanted rich colors for that series. I know, for instance, the scenes on the roof were not blown out like he ended up color correcting them.

I wanted to point all this out because, well, we all do a lot of pixel peeping, and the distortion on this fake trailer was intentional to give it a style, which hides a lot of the beauty of the FS100. That said, some of this is shot at +30dB.

The scene of the guy getting punched, I shot that, and the camera shake was done while shooting, I timed it with the hit. Again, no rolling shutter artifacts pop out on viewing. I COULD NOT do this with the 7D, I know, I tried many times. I had to add in post.

We like to do these little one offs just to play around with different styles and go WAY over the top with them. Which we did!

Now this is a screen shot unedited at +30dB. He is moving in the shot so I don't have a good still, but what I love is the noise movement in this is very organic looking. This looked AMAZING to me, I cannot believe it's +30dB. I could not see this well in this shot (and if the focus was off, this was part of the problem).

Truly amazing performance.

I'll try to post back here when we actually have some stuff that does show where the FS100 shines from a color/resolution standpoint because frankly, this is not that. :)

Also, he used some stock footage too. Aerials, people walking, cars, all the B-roll.

Hello all,
I live in PAL land and was going to buy locally but does this new firmware mean I can purchase say, from USA and utilise PAL?
thanks!

hi
Yes it seems to be in this way .I am from pal land too .In USA FS100 is cheaper.

Have you taken into account customs and delivery? If I ordered from the US to Denmark, I'd end up paying the same price, and I wouldn't be able to deduct the tax.
However, if I ordered from Germany, I could avoid the tax altogether and get it cheaper than here.

Yes, watch out for import taxes. Much bigger than you'll be expecting.

A good way of getting a cut price FS100 is to get a Sony Grade A refurb. It'll have low hours, be spotless or very nearly and have a year's warranty.

I try and get refurbs for everything and I've never had a bad experience but have saved a lot of money too.
