FS100/700 18-55mm E-mount lens

Have any FS100 users had an experience with the shorter kit lens, the 18-55mm f3.5-5.6?

If so, any thoughts?

I would like more information regarding this as well. Mainly for the OSS and how well does the
auto focus work or is it viable with a follow focus?

Any feedback is appreciated.

Horrible worthless lens.

I used to play hackysack with it on set, and I just took it apart just to see how it ticked.

I absolutely hate this lens. With a passion.

Will not work with follow focus very well. It does not have witness marks, as it is an electronic focusing lens (will rotate forever in a single direction), it telescopes when you zoom, etc.

If I ever die and go to hell, I'm expecting to see many things from this life waiting to greet me. This lens in one of them.

I could barely stomach taking photos with it on my NEX camera. I can't even stand the idea of using it for video. It's a far cry from a good photography lens and would make an even worse cinema lens.

I'm not a big fan and whilst i haven't taken it apart it has the occasional use. The OSS is pretty good and it focuses pretty close. I find the image unsubtle and contrasty.

So if you need OSS in a small package with that kind of range and you don't need speed then it's fine.

I've had a few of them, they come with the NEX cameras and they end up on ebay or collecting dust.

Love the NEX on the end of that Cooke. I thought my 2470Z was amusing with it...

Lol.

I just don't like it because it does everything a lens should not do.

1) The optical quality is not amazing nor special.
2) Electronic focus, so there is no hard stops, witness marks, etc
3) Can't control the aperture except with the camera
4) Lens telescopes when you zoom
5) Not a constant aperture, also starts at a slow speed especially in photography world, and gets even slower as you zoom. I'd understand this on a lens like the Lumix 14-140, because of it's great range (10x zoom)... but an 18-55 isn't all that to justify the slowness. It is small, light and very cheap feeling. The 16mm pancake lens they make impressed me more with build quality.

The cool part about the E-mount is that is can be adapted to many other lens formats. I have not explored the newer E-mount lenses, but for the most part I'd get a nice quality adapter and use the usual suspects people really like. Of course you will loose the ability for OSS and auto functions.

However, I have heard there is a Sony Alpha smart mount that let's you use Alpha lenses and keep the electronic functions of the lens. I'd say those lenses are better built than the E-mount lenses, if you have to go with a lens that communicates with the body.

Ryan good post and thanks for sharing.

I'm looking for a good companion for my Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 and Nikon 80-200 f/2.8. I would love something
with a decent reach and fairly wide however, OSS (or some kind of image stabilization is a
requirement). It would be pure event work based hence the zoom. Have my prime
set no issues there.

Anyone have ideas? Willing to look at adapters but perhaps would invest in Sony over others.
Appears they are not quite there yet Canon adapters. Note with the Nikon 17-55 I use it has no hard stops
which is not convenient but all of my zooms are event work lenses so it's not bad.

Anything decent with the Sony A mount and a LA-EA2? AF aside aside obviously.

The 17-55 nikkor has more friction at the ends does it not?

The sony E lenses are totally different focus experience from even an AF nikkor or canon

But AF and OSS can be useful and the total lack of mass/price means it is a legit part of your package of lenses

You could get the 18-200 instead which is a bit bigger but more versatile

and at least it talks to the camera without locking at 3.5 or having the other issues of A lenses

Are you referencing the zoom side or focus ring? The zoom ring on mine does however,
the focus ring is quite smooth if memory serves correct. It's a none issue though. It's easy enough to focus past and focus
back to avoid not being able to reach a close focus or infinity. Pain for none event work but that's pretty much
all this lens was purchased for.

In regards to AF it's not desired. Is the LA-EA2 stuck at 3.5 even without using AF?
Never done much research on the product. I am looking at getting a bit more versatility
in regards to mobility. A decent lens with stabilization to plop on the Glidecam or a Monopod
would be great. The added smoothness would be a huge benefit for my shooting style.
The 18-55 seemed like a somewhat OK shot at around $200. Seems like that's a no
go though.

Any viable suggestions? Wish I could find one without committing to something like Sony
or Canon...would much rather my Nikon glass just have usable stabilization to avoid being
locked into a certain manufacturer.
