FS-100 to External HD saving issues

Hi,
I didn't find an answer to this problem I've encountered.

I usually download my FS-100 via firewire by drag-dropping it's files to another external drive attached to my MacBook Pro FW800 port. I've never encountered a problem or glitch.

I recently shot very long takes in QT mode on the FS-100. Since it breaks up the take into smaller QT files, I was careful to only drag-n-drop 6-10 clips at a time. I realize that at 720p rez, these clips were 2GB each.

For some reason the transfer would lock up. Sometimes after only a few hundred MB, sometimes after almost 10GB. Sometimes I would have no problem at all. Very Strange. I would have to exit the Firestore mid-transfer just to get out of the "Spinning color-wheel of death".

I would re-boot and transfer one file with success, but with another single file my Mac would say it's not a QT file and not play! It plays fine via the Firestore.

Eventually I was able to transfer all my footage by using another FW400 drive (albeit with the same intermittent issues) and painstakingly, patiently transfering the FS-100 QT clips in very small batches.

I am not using or going through FCP - I'm aware of the issues some of you have had- I am only dragging clips from 1 drive to another. But if it helps you to know, I have FCP 5.4 and my FS-100 has v3.0 software.

Any thoughts? Am I not transfering my FS-100 files correctly??

Many thanks,
Craig
