My FS-100 is shipping today. It should be a good solution for me because I want the 1080 out and the P2 card capacity is an issue at present. If I'm surprised by the device one way or the other, I'll start a thread on it.

what are the inconvenients of using a laptop?

You can't capture 720P native with laptop, I don't believe. Also, besides the terrible mobility issue, you also most likely have a battery issue too. Your laptop battery won't last as long as your camera battery. I guess you could get backup laptop batteries, but then you get to stop the video shoot while you change out your laptop battery. I personally think capturing straight to laptop is bad if it is your only solution. You need to at least have a 4GB card to go along with it. Imagine just needing to go shoot a small little clip real quick, and having to lug around your laptop with you. What a pain that would be. Also, capturing straight to a laptop would give you a higher risk of skipping/missing frames on capture, than shooting straight to P2 cards would.
