FS 100 is shipping...I think?

Cool!

I've been waiting for the Firestore to be available.

For documentaries is a must.

Very hard to work with P2 cards at the present level of storage.

The price seems a bit much. but doable.

I thought the Firestore was supposed to be shipping by the end of March.:(

Street price should be lower than the $2,195 listed at Panny (in fact, $2,000 would probably be a good price to get it at). Definitely a must for doc work.

I'm failing to see whats to special about a 100gb drive costing $2k

You can get a MacBookPro with 120gb internal drive for that much.

So, yes I realize it allows streaming straight from the camera to HD, and that is a valuable asset to things like reality TV and docs....but what makes it worth such a high price with such minial storage?

Firestore ships end of April.

A 100 GB hard drive will offer up to 100 minutes of DVCPRO HD, 2 hours of DVCPRO50, and 4 hours of DV or DVCPRO25.

In these last two 25 Mb formats, it also acts like the previous version of Firestore product, the FS-4 allowing the user to make the video file, the file format for their particular edit system. In DVCPRO50 and DVCPRO HD, the FS-100 will record the MXF files which will import into the NLE that support the MXF file structure; Final Cut Pro, Avid Express Pro HD and Canopus Edius Broadcast.

Key points to remember are:
* Optimized for the AG-HVX200
* Records over 100 minutes for all DVCPRO formats including HD
* FS-100s can be easily daisy-chained for longer recording times
* Direct To Edit (DTE) Technology with P2 MXF compatibility
* Small enclosure weighing about 1lb.
* Removable/ Rechargeable Li-Ion Battery Pack
* Advanced features include time lapse, retro-disk recording
* Field upgradeable with a summer release to include thumbnails

EDIT: Off speed clips will have to extracted via software such as FCP- same work flow as the VariCam for off speed clips.

EDIT: $1999.00 with free shipping.
I'm taking orders now.

Please, clarify "does not support undercranking or overcranking". If it's "optimized for the HVX-200", you'd think that would definitely be something that it would support. Especially at $2200 bucks.

the FS-100 doesn't record native HVX-200
now if i'm paying 2000+ dollars for just 100GB with no native recording, i have to say this company has to reconsider its pricepoint.

Cineporter records natively and will offer 320GB for 3000 or 160GB for much less. maybe there will be other units hitting the blocks at NAB tath will offer great quality for a better price, who knows.

add to that:

$ for software to catpure
size of laptop vs. Firestore

wait wait i assumed that it could still undercrank and overcrank without being native, you would just have an NLE that would take out the redundant frames (3:2 pulldown) like VEGAS with raylight. so its not being recorded native but if you can remove pulldown, you will still be able to undercrank and overcrank. right??!? barry help us out here. heh.

It will still undercrank/overcrank...but you are shooting on a 720/24p timeline...so its like the varicam where the actually visual look is done in post.

I am not bagging the FS...it just sounds WAY too expensive for what it is so I want to know what the hub bub is...cineporter sounds too pricey too.

all these units are all overpriced. if they could cut the price down by a grand, than we could talk. I think they are pricing them based on the price of the p2 card, which is high cause panny is the only manufacturer that produces them. once third parties come in the price will be cut significantly on the p2s.

If cineporter was smart, they would charge 999 for the 160GB and 1500 for the 320GB, gather market share, become the market leader and continue to improve the product.

You CAN do overcrank undercrank it will just be in the 720/24p or 720/30p mode and not the 24pN (navtive) mode. You will use the frame converter in post. Using the Firestore for variable frame rates will be JUST LIKE the varicam.

Gaaah!, exactly what can't firestore do that the p2 can do? I thought firestore had the same features!!! Does it support overcranking in 50p?

I also thought native was just a technic to save space like LP is.

So its looks different the native recording? and in what way? I got one on order so I really need to know. I looked at www.focusinfo.com but i couldn't find any information about this so i hope you guys can help out.

Someone clarify precisely how to pull the "redundant frames" out in post when you don't shoot native to P2. Will the over/undercranking using the Firestore and editing it in post look EXACTLY as it would if it were recorded natively to P2 cards?
