FS-100 enabling native 720/24p!

Focus announced the version 3.0 firmware upgrade for its popular FS-100 enabling users to record native 720/24p, 25p and 30p in the MXF P2 or QuickTime file formats commonly used in Apple's Final Cut Pro. Native file format support only records the required frames in a DVCPRO HD stream, eliminating the need to remove advanced pulldown or duplicate frames during import to the edit system. The new 3.0 software version also adds QuickTime support for native frame rates as well as other 720p and 1080i DVCPRO HD record modes for DTE workflow within Apple Final Cut Pro, bypassing the normal P2 import process thereby decreasing workflow. Version 3.0 is expected to be available in the middle of the fourth quarter, 2006.

Records NATIVE 24p.... I thought they were never able to do that since they are recording from firewire? Does that mean the 100gig FS drive can store 250 minutes of 720/24pn?

The camera must be in a non-native recording mode, but the FS-100 will do the pulldown and remove the duplicate frames. You therefore have the same storage requirements on disk as you would have if you could output native mode through the DV port.

Yes it does. Or, it will, once the firmware update is ready. And the camera is not set to 24pN mode, it's set to 24p mode, the FireStore just now has the ability to ignore duplicate frames and store the native frames. Or, more accurately, it *will* have that capability when firmware 3.0 is released later this year.

So, this means that we would not be able to record variables frames on the FS100 even with the new firmware 3.0 since the HVX200 has to be set to 24pN for that... Am I right or not? Please correct me if necessary! Thank you in advance.

Can anyone confirm that the stream will include sound when shooting variable framerates? If so then the firestore is a huge improvement over the HVX, I have never understood why they crippled the 720PN mode with no sound, so if the firestore is capturing 720p, one presumes it is capturing audio and converting the files to equivalent 720PN. Thats actually brilliant when/if it works.

720pN does capture sound if you're shooting at the default frame rate. It's only in offspeed shooting that sound gets disabled.

Don't know whether the FS-100 records sound or not during offspeed shooting. Actually, now that I think about it, I don't know if FCP or DV Rack 2.0 HD do either; they both do the live-capture-to-24pN thing but I don't know how either handles sound in an off-speed scenario.

Yes the FS-100 records sound while recording in different framerates and while bringing into FCP. http://www.pmpworks.com/fixed/Fire.mov (72.5MB)
If you listen you can hear the fire, I added a little music to it.
Recorded to FS-100 720p 24p at 48FPS (Overcranked)
I also highly recommend the switch to Mac, it's worth it.

It should be in Q4...I used an alpha version of the software at IBC and basic functionality was working, which is good news!

I'll keep you posted.

Thanks,

Matt

Matt - A poster in this thread asked if the FS-100 would allow 250 minutes at 720/24pN. This seems accurate based on what the current 8GB P2 cards can provide.

Using native frame rate recording, users can more than double the record time on the FS-100 from 100 minutes to over 200 minutes.
25% more recording time is definitely a nice selling point. While I can't argue that technically 250 minutes is "over" 200, why would Focus only state "over 200" when nearly an hour more footage at 720/24pN can be recorded? Or is there an issue that doesn't allow the FS-100 to record it's full potential? And if so, how does this effect the other framerates?

We have not done full testing (or finished development) on this yet, hence why we have only stated over 200 minutes of recording. But, 720p/24 native recording is at 40Mb/s, so when using this mode you will get greater than 200 minutes. I would say your calculation is about correct, but I will post here once it is fully tested. Obviously, we do not use 100% of the drive (we leave about 1% free for fragmentation etc.).

Hope that helps,

Matt

Excellent. Thanks for the info!

If i understand this right, the Cineporter is less usefull if the firestore supports the same formats?

- Still, I've seen a few dropout issues with the firestore. Maby the Cineporter is bugfree :p

The HVX200 is designed from the ground up around P2 media, and the Cineporter will emulate that exactly, so all of the things you can do with P2 media will work exactly the same way with the Cineporter.

The FS-100 and the Cineporter can do many of the same things, but the way you do it is different. The procedures for reviewing thumbnails, deleting clips, doing interval recording etc. are different. Other things are missing entirely on the FS-100 AFAIK, such as loop recording, annotating or marking clips, or dubbing overcranked footage to DV tape.

Loop record, pre-record & interval are all in the FS-100's feature set. I think you can rename/delete clips, but didn't get that far/need it the days I rented it.
It's a nice piece of gear that seems to grow to the occation. But it still need to grow some...
