Looking for a woman

p.s. look at that guy's tattoo. lol.

self-distribution IS the future of indie filmmaking. more and more artists want to retain ownership of their work. im not sure if this particular model is going to be successful, but i welcome it. for Heart of Now, i will be submitting to festivals to garner accolades and prestige around it, but I have no intention of selling it to a distributor.

i must say, this distribution model of theirs IS reflective of how the industry is changing, where the audience is deciding what content they want to see, instead of studio execs deciding what the audience will have available to them.

Hmm. It's an interesting debate. Say you shoot a feature for 20k.

Would you sell it to a distro company for 50k

Or take the time to sell it yourself in hopes of recouping not only the 20k, but 50k in the long run with no money for advertising outlets, etc?

And say that you got funding for the feature. How would you pay those people back? It'd be quite some time before you would begin to see profit (if at all) in the lifespan.

Just as well, wouldn't selling it for 50k allow you to go into making your next feature? And the fact that you got it sold to a distributor for double what you made it for would probably be a really good thing to show future investors for larger budgets.

So what are the real benefits of self distribution?

it is a one in a million shot to sell a low budget feature for more than twice what it cost to make. . usually filmmakers working with budgets under 200K do not recoup their budget, let alone make a profit, when their film is distributed. there are the miracle cases like blair witch and el mariachi, but those are the exception. in most cases, indie filmmakers are settling just for getting it out there. here, you are in control of your work, you still own it, and the money you make is only limited to your own ingenuity. that's the appeal of self-distribution or me

Yeah those guys are pretty interesting
they're members here too
Four Eyed Monster

No that's not actually Arin or Susan - it's their friend the infamous Mike Krumlauf ("Danny Boyle," "Young Filmer" etc.)

Fromheretoawesome seems like a cool idea. I like what these guys are trying to do...but as Zak said, while we know which direction everything's going, no one knows exactly what will end up working the best. The next few years are going to be very interesting for indie distribution.
