from HVX Direct to Power Book G 4 FCP, non controled device, instead of capture on p2 card, is that the same quality as saving to p2 card? If it is I can have my powerbook at the shoot and just capture directly in to fcp. But is that true HD footage?

Because in the menu recording mode it show dvcpro50 in blue , it's not dvpro HD, so I thought that might make a diff

It's blue because that option is not available / applicable. If you are recording in 720 or 1080, the codec is fixed at DVCProHD and the recording format option is disabled, showing you the last setting that was used. It's a little confusing, but covered in the manual (and Barry's book).

Hey Kevin,
I have never even attempted direct recording but need to do some tests.
Are you recording direct to FCP through a FW cable to your PB 1.67 to a FW 800 drive?
Could you give a quick workflow or set up map. Any insight would be great.
Thanks, Ray

Match your Final Cut Pro sequence settings with the HVX200 settings for anything but pNative.

In the log and capture window, set to non controllable device.

Hit "now" and "escape" to capture and stop capture.
